Even in 1986 some of the cross country services from Cambridge to Birmingham were still formed of classic dmus. On March 15 1M66, the 08.52 ex Cambridge, is seen here arriving at Whittlesea with a four car formation of Cravens set 49 (E54463 + E51271) leading a 2 car Metro-Cammell Class 101. Naturally we chose to sit in the leading set for maximum good vibrations! Photo by Philip Mott. Gerard Fletcher.

At Peterborough set 49 makes a healthy exhaust as it departs for Birmingham - you can almost hear that great Cravens cacophany. Taken on March 15th, 1986, by the end of July 1986, the number of Cravens sets in service at Norwich had reduced to just seven, the set seen here E51271 + E54463 along with six other sets went to Lincoln for a brief reprieve. E54458 at Peterborough on March 15th, 1986. This one took us by surprise. Most of the time the Doncaster - Lincoln - Peterborough dmu services were operated by the Derby Heavyweight Class 114 units, but here one of Lincoln's Class 105s arrives instead. Photo by Phil Mott. Gerard Fletcher.

At Norwich on 15/3/86 is Sheringham bound Set 30 on the left (E54125 closest) alongside Set 34, a relatively recent arrival at Norwich depot, but destined to be one of the final seven sets based there. Formed of E54421 & E53366, the set number is shown in the old destination indicator on the trailer which is possibly unique. Photo by Philip Mott. Gerard Fletcher.

105 DMU

22nd March 1986

Set: 42

Tyseley depot has for many years hosted other regions' DMUs when fuelling is required as was the case on 22 March 1986 when 3 all-blue Cravens class 105 units were photographed heading towards Birmingham New Street ready to go east on a Norwich service. The trailing set is number 42, formed of 54443 and presumably 51272, with the instantly recognisable Birmingham city skyline in the background along with the well-used freight yard on the left. This scene has changed since the date of this picture with new housing on the right, a rationalised yard on the left and many changes to the city buildings in the background. Peter Tandy.
