The five LMR power-trailer sets from the first batch (with the blanked off top marker lamp) were allocation to Llandudno Junction for around six months at this time, the arrival of Derby Lightweights from Monument Lane allowed them to move to Toton. Standing under the vast roof of Birmingham New street (Midland side) is a Cravens, future class 105, DMU the driver of which is in a uniform of jacket over overalls and peaked cap, in those days it was possible for train crew to get steam or diesel to drive. This class of DMU were very common on the Birmingham - Nuneaton - Leicester service. Sharing the Midland side of New Street is Fowler compound 41157. This loco, a 4-4-0 was built by the North British Locomotive Company in September 1925, at the time of this photo it was a 17F Trafford Park engine. In mid-October 1958 two Cravens sets (51257 + 56415 and 51261 + 56419) began working Kings Cross Great Northern line suburban services. This was an initial step towards a planned 20 sets being in operation during the first half of the following year (ultimately there would be 26 sets). The two sets are seen at Palmers Green station circa November 1958. British Railways.

A brand new Cravens set approaching Slateford from Craiglockhart using a new connection linking the Edinburgh suburban line with the Edinburgh Princes Street to Glasgow main line. Guests on the special included the British Transport Commission Chairman Sir Ian Bolton and the Scottish Area Board. Their visit to Edinburgh on March 19 1959 also included the diesel school at Leith Central depot. The image appeared in the May 1959 Scottish Region edition of the British Railways Staff Magazine.
