Network South-East held an open day at Colchester Depot on the May Day Bank Holiday Monday, 2nd May 1988. Norwich Crown Point's Cravens Set 53359 + 54122 was diagrammed all day on the Colchester to Sudbury Branch, and is seen here at Colchester Station about to set off for another run down the branch. Norwich based class 105 'Cravens' DMU set no.30 (53359+54122), by this time one of the very few left in passenger service on the network, calls at West Runton whist working a Sheringham-Norwich service on 17th August 1988. This DMU was restored to a retro BR livery with cats whiskers in April 1986 to mark the end of DMU operations on the Anglia Region in the London Area. It was withdrawn on the 03/11/88 and with the unit being considered to have asbestos contamination it went to Mayer-Newman's scrapyard at Snailwell, where it was incinerated in the fire tunnel and reduced to scrap on 23/02/89. Three 2-car Class 105s heading away from the camera towards Norwich at Diss on the Ipswich to Norwich line. Date unknown, but between the introduction of set numbers at Norwich in 1971 and the end of the use of headcodes in 1976. Closest is almost certainly the regular DMBS in set 31 at the time, E50371. The 2-car class 105 'Cravens' DMU sets were synonymous with East Anglia in the BR era as Norwich Thorpe depot had a large allocation. This scene on December 31, 1982 depicts an afternoon gathering of the class at Ipswich where five Norwich sets are captured line a breast but only four were placed conveniently side by side. Set 61 in the platform with people boarding was working 2R22 the 12.52 via the East Suffolk line to Lowestoft. The line up left to right comprises; set 31. 53375+54468, set 52. 51299+54429, set 66. 51260+54130, set 61. 51290+54462, and 51478 on the very left. Adrian Nicholls.
