In refurbished white with blue stripe livery, a Class 108 two-car DMU formed of DMBS M50974 & DTCL M56257 was stood at end of the Coast Line at a sad-looking Blackpool South on a rather dull July 9th 1979. The tail lamp on the platform marked the limit of travel, the unit would form the 19.28 departure back to Kirkham. The former booking hall on Waterloo Road bridge was in use as a model railway shop with a large exhibition layout. The wooden buildings at platform level had survived the massive rationalisation that Blackpool South underwent during the period 1964-1970. Martyn Hilbert.
With the tail lamp on the platform marking the limit of travel on the East side of the remaining island platform, A two-car Class 108 formed of DTCL M56257 & DMBS M50974 had arrived at Blackpool South with the 18.58 from Kirkham, and with the tail lamp in place, was ready for working back along the Coast Line at 19.28 on the evening of July 9th 1979. The land to the left of the DMU was the site of through running lines and the Marton Direct Line from Kirkham, once a busy railway in the days when the terminus at Blackpool Central handled prodigious amounts of excursion traffic, right up until it closed in 1964. On 10 July 1979, a class 108 diesel unit, built at Derby Works, is seen at Ravenglass heading for Barrow. On the platform next to the train can be seen a set of steps used to assist passengers in boarding from the low platform. Jeremy Chapter.

Taken with a long-lens, a Derby Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars M51925 & M52037 was approaching Bamber Bridge with a Colne to Preston service on August 10th 1979. At the time the stone built Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway waiting room was still standing on the eastbound platform, along with the subway buildings adjacent to the level crossing. The 108 had just passed under what was a historic bridge. The brick built structure was the first in the UK that took a Motorway over a railway line, the M6 Preston By-pass opening for business in December 1958 and was the first stretch of motorway in Britain. The bridge was enlarged and altered when the M6 was widened in the late 1990's. Martyn Hilbert.
The colliery was situated about mile south of Workington station and was only in production from 1944 until closure in May 1973. The twin headstocks were still standing in 1979, a northbound DMU passing on 15 August. Kevin Lane.

A Class 108 two-car DMU with DMBS M50944 leading, accelerates away from Midge Hall with an Ormskirk to Preston service on August 30th 1979. The brick structure visible to the right of the DMU is the gable-end of the former Goods Shed at the long-closed Midge Hall station. The station closed in 1960 and there have been long-running campaigns to have the station re-opened as the Western fringe of a developed Leyland has almost reached this location. In 1979 the former Up Line along here was still in use, single track commencing just South of the level crossing seen in the far-distance, where a VW Camper is passing over the line. Martyn Hilbert.
