On a miserable wet evening one of Allerton depot's 2-Car class 108 DMU's rolls into Warrington Central with train 2H92 the 17.29 Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Piccadilly on 29/03/83. Pretty well at the limit of what my Praktica MTL3 camera loaded with Perutz CT100 film in poor light could achieve at the time. The assistance of Photoshop and Lightroom has at least allowed the image to be salvaged from the seconds file. Adrian Nicholls.

A BR Derby-built class 108 2-car set with E56191 leading passes the remote cabin at Crabley Creek shortly before a heavy downpour on 5th April 1983. The box is situated between Brough and Gilberdyke and the train is a York to Hull service. Syd Young.

In rural West Lancashire, A Class 108 2-Car DMU formed of M52051 & M51936 arrives at Bescar Lane whilst working a Southport to Manchester Victoria service on April 9th 1983. The station here was in a time warp, with an ex LYR Signalbox, timber level crossing gates, semaphore signals and station buildings that had British Rail posters from 1971 announcing the change to decimal currency, and on one board the tattered remains of an LMS poster! Deep in rural West Lancashire, a 2-Car Class 108 DMU formed of cars M51936 & M52051 calls at Bescar Lane with a Southport to Manchester Victoria service on April 9th 1983. At the time the station still had a working signal box that controlled a traditional timber gated level crossing. The station still retained its building on the Southport bound platform, which in 1983 displayed a BR poster about Decimalisation (1971) and the tattered remains of an LMS poster. Martyn Hilbert.

On 16 April 1983 Chester allocated Class 108 DMBS M53938 and its Class 101 partner - presumably 56411 - is seen at Swansea with a Class 101 on the rear with the 10:08 service to Shrewsbury. Robert Thomas.

A Class 108 DMBS heads a DMU service in platform 13 of Manchester Victoria in May 1983 as Mark II coaches including TSO no. E5383 stand in platform 14. All of this area of the station was demolished ten years later to make room for the Manchester Evening News Arena. S Gaskell.

M51567, Sc59060 & M53926 at Dunfermline, Tuesday 7th June 1983, about to depart with the 19:47 Edinburgh Waverley – Cowdenbeath service. I considered this unusual during a visit to Scotland in June 1983, a 3 car DMU comprising two Class 108 motor cars (on loan from Chester) sandwiching a Metro Cammell trailer. What made it unusual was the centrally mounted headlamp on both motor cars which indicated that they had come from those sets so equipped to work the Central Wales Line. At this time the station nameboards simply read “Dunfermline” but the platform lamps confusingly still showed the station’s former name of “Dunfermline Lower”. Nowadays the station is known as “Dunfermline Town”. The local council, having devoted considerable energy in changing every road sign from “Town Centre” to “City Centre”, requested that the station be renamed “Dunfermline City”, which was abandoned as the cost pr Brian McDevitt.
