In the late 1980s Network South East launched an experimental service from Bedford and Kettering to Corby, well outside of NSE's normal area. The service used DMUs from Bletchley's allocation, and on Saturday 11th February 1989 a 4 car set made up of 53599 59735 59206 and 51572 (closest) depart Wellingborough for Corby. AndrewHA.

S946 (presumably 52046 + 53939) is working the 12.52 Shrewsbury-Swansea and S951 (presumably 52041 + 53935) the 11.49 Swansea-Shrewsbury. On a cold Winter evening, a Class 108 two-car DMU formed of DMBS M53970 & DTSL M56264 was stood in platform 6 at Preston with a Barrow-In-Furness service on February 18th 1989. The 108's were once synonomous with the Cumbrian Coast route, a large allocation being once based at Carlisle that had bars fitted over the door droplights due to restricted clearances on the Maryport to Carlisle section of the route.
