Class 116 DMS 53900 in Newcastle station on 13 October 1987. It carries Valley Train markings and set number C313 from its previous allocation to Cardiff, it moved to the north-east to cover for Pacer problems. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Derby built Class 116 high density set, ex Tyseley set T702 comprising of 53920, 59372, 53867 is seen in all over blue livery, at Manchester Victoria. These high density sets were certainly not common to Manchester and was probably drafted in to cover the Pacer shortage at the time before withdrawal, this was one of the last Class 116 sets to carry all over blue livery and was withdrawn in this livery. 17th October 1987. Class 116 DMBS with West Midlands PTE markings has been requisitioned to work Royston shuttles from Cambridge on a quiet Sunday morning 18-10-87. On Tour With The Class 13 Army.
Still carrying its Western Region W prefix to its number, Class 116 Suburban Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) W53087 was passing Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Clitheroe special working on October 24th 1987 with W59037 and W53129. Through the offside cab window, someone with a Mayorial chain can be seen sitting in the front saloon behind the cab. The unit had previously been allocated to Cardiff Canton and had been transferred to Newton Heath in September 1987, at a time when there was much flux in the surviving members of the first generation DMU fleet to provide cover for errant class 142's, the better examples appearing in parts of the country that they had never previously worked, the situation being eased as the new BREL York Class 150/2 Sprinter fleet came into service. The set number in the left cab window has been turned over and "Express To " chalked on with no destination mentioned. Is that two staff member standing looking at the engine? This is believed to be 53061, seen at Aberdare on 13 November 1987. Reduced to two cars (53901 + 53848), a Class 116 DMU is seen at Manchester Victoria in late 1987. Newton Heath depot had an allocation of these suburban units at the time, and they saw use on services to the north of Manchester. Graeme Phillips Collection.
With frost still on the sleepers at lunchtime, a three-car Class 116 Suburban DMU with Driving Motor Second M53920 leading (presumably with 59372 + 53867), was darkening the sky as it climbed the gradient from Farington Curve Junction with a Preston to Ormskirk service on December 9th 1987. The DMU was passing the site of the former Moss Lane Junction that ran straight ahead towards Lostock Hall at this location. Until closure in 1972, it enabled trains to and from East Lancashire to access the former main line to Ormskirk and Liverpool Exchange without running via Preston. In the foreground is the part dismantled former Up line to Midge Hall, taken out of use in 1983, it took many years for it to be lifted and the track materials to be recovered. Martyn Hilbert.
