The first Derby suburban triple (Class 116) DMU when brand new circa April 1957. The vehicles in this Derby Works image (negative 57/461) are W50050 + W59000 + W50092 probably taken at Rushton on the Churnet Valley line. Note the marker lamps on the cab front, they are not painted in the cab colour as they normally were. Also the outer pair are shallower than normal and have a plate fitted over them. British Railways.

The marker lamp casings on the lower cab front are not painted in the body colour as they normally were; the outer pair are shallower than normal with plates over them. Taken at Rushton station on the Churnet Valley line, looking south. British Railways.

A Derby Works image (negative 57/470) showing the ends of TC W59000 (left) and DMBS W50050 (right) when new circa April 1957. The gear on the end of the centre car is for the communication cord. Note the far side has a footstep and handrail for staff to reach the reset 'butterfly', on the closest side they are not fitted but there are bolts where they should be. The writing on the lower corner reads in different rows 'C' (for composite, the vehicle type) 'TRIPLE' (the formation), 'S.P. 3-59' ('Shopping Proposal' - its next works date), 'NEW - 2001' (2001 is the code for Derby Works), '11-3-57' and then a paint date which is not readable. An official image (Derby Works negative 57/468) showing the first class areas in a trailer composite (thought to be W59000) from the first batch of Derby suburban triple sets circa April 1957. Taken in the smoking compartments looking through to the non-smoking, behind the solid partition was not the end of the vehicle but a second class compartment. The seat material was the same pattern used on other builds such as the West Riding and West Cumberland Derby Lightweights, although in third class not first. British Railways.

Work is also progressing on a chassis to the left, above which hangs a sign 'Stage 1A, stud welding, fasten down floor panels'. To the left of the coupling hook on the closest vehicle is written '30213 No.24' which means it was a DMS, the 24th vehicle of Lot 30213 would become 50125 if delivered in order, new to Cathays in August. On the rear of the print was written 'This for the advert says Mr Baxter 27/5/57'. British Railways.
