DMU entering Quakers yard station in 1959 (possibly 13 June) by Derek Chaplin. In 1959 Derek Chaplin accompanied BBC broadcaster Wynford Vaughan Thomas making a radio broadcast catching trains only from Cardiff to North Wales and calling in on both the embryonic Talyllyn and Ffestiniog railways. Subsequently, Derek made up a 35mm slide show called " Trains of Wales 1959" which he showed at railway societies. These 137 mainly Kodachrome slides have been found by his family preserved in a dry wooden storage box and I am privileged to scan them for people to see again. The notes on each slide are minimalist and with no actual dates so anybody who can add interesting information is appreciated. Peter Brabham Collection.
View from Walnut Tree Viaduct on 13 June 1959 by Derek Chaplin. You are standing on the Barry railway looking down on the Taff Vale, Rhymney and Cardiff railway lines plus the Glamorganshire canal. You can see what a bottleneck the taff Gorge was geographically. A view up the Taff valley much changed today with the A470 Dual carriageway and the new South Wales Metro Depot under construction. Natgarw colliery and coke works in the far background. A DMU calls at Swan Village station, West Bromwich, circa 1960, and seems to be a 3-car set with an extra DMS (or DTS) attached at the front. Swan Village was situated on the GWR main line from Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level. The train is heading in the Birmingham direction and in the distance can be seen Hill Top tunnel, beyond which lies Wednesbury and the route to Wolverhampton. Original photo by the late John Evans.
