This isn't the greatest shot of Smethwick West signal box but I was keen to have a few pictures of trains passing it as even in 1986 there were reports of its closure. This finally happened in 1990 when the line was resignalled. Here is my only picture of a DMU passing the box with T621 (presumably 53837 + 59604 + 53919) passing by on a Birmingham New Street to Great Malvern service on 29 August 1986. I once spoke to a relief signalman who worked the box on occasions and was told that the frame interlocking area had a large population of rats in residence and that the relatively isolated location made it a target for vandals from the surrounding area. Few signalmen mourned its passing. Peter Tandy.
Tyseley DMU set TS621 (53837 + 59604 + 53919) in Blaenau Ffestiniog station on 22 July 1987. Keith Miller.
Class 116 DMBS M51138 leads Tyseley set TS622 at Birmingham Moor Street on 21st January 1984 Kevin Law.
This was for many years one of my favourite locations for northbound trains on the GWR line between Leamington Spa and Birmingham. It was somewhere around half way up Hatton Bank and was a very pleasant and quiet location for an afternoon's photography. There was plenty of freight traffic interspersed with regular DMMUs between Leamington, Stratford-upon-Avon and Birmingham along with ECS moves such as this one formed of a class 116 (TS622 with a Met-Camm centre car, presumably 53071 + 59114 + 53880) coupled to a class 108 Derby Lightweight which I took on 28 August 1986. Around 10 or 12 years after this view young trees were planted along the fenceline and have now completely obscured the line so much so that one can walk along the permissive footpath and not know that there is railway line alongside. Peter Tandy.
No room in the bays. This was the scene one Saturday morning in April 1985 with every bay road on the down side at Leamington Spa occupied. The train on the left has a window board reading T619 but it appears to be a single unit as was the practice at the time, preparing to head off to Stratford-upon-Avon within the next few minutes. Next in line is 58 016 which was also getting ready to move out onto the main line. This was a weekly occurrence at the time and I seem to recall that the locomotive involved may have taken over a northbound freightliner with the other engine coming off the train but I didn't make any notes and can't remember exactly what happened. To the right of 58 016 is T623, probably formed of 53893 + 59603 + 53838, and then a second class 116 with no set number visible. The latter 2 units were stabled ready to work trains to Birmingham Moor Street later in the day. Peter Tandy.
A pair of WMPTE class 116 dmus (TS624 and presumably 51130 closest with 59615 + 51143) forming one of the Coalville Open day shuttles, having traveled on this along the freight only line from Leicester to Coalville, the train is now loading up again before continuing to Burton-on-Trent. 1st September 1985. Andrew J Crowther.
51130 / TS624 (presumably with 59615 + 51143) at Buxton on the 13th October 1985. This was a BR organised day excursion from Derby, formed of a Class 116 and Class 120. Chris Lings.
Newly painted class 116 set TS624 (presumably 51143 + 59615 + 51130) approaching Small Heath with a Birmingham Moor Street to Stratford-upon-Avon train on 22 March 1986. I never felt entirely comfortable in this location if no other photographers were present as there was a bit of a dodgy pub immediately to the left of the road bridge but on this occasion there wasn't an issue because 2 steam-hauled workings were working away from Birmingham... Peter Tandy.
Tyseley set T624, 51130 closest presumably with 59615 + 51143, arrives at Hereford with a service from Birmingham in April 1987. Paul James.
A common sight for many years were Derby class 116 suburban DMUs at Birmingham Moor St. Here M53106 heads a set waiting to form a service to Leamington Spa in the autumn of 1986. Murray Liston.

Class 116 set TS625 at Stourbridge Junction on 1st February 1987. Ian Buck.
Friday 03/04/1987, 1520 hours at Whitchurch (Shropshire). Set TS625 has just arrived with the 1450 service from Shrewsbury which terminates at Whitchurch. The driver enters 53106 before commencing a reversing move to transfer the set to the Shrewsbury bound platform. The set will then work the 1525 service to Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton. Note that the date shown on the cab board is wrong - this photo was taken on 03/04/1987! In 1987 this was the only service on the Shrewsbury to Crewe line to terminate and reverse at Whitchurch. The crossover which allowed this reversal was removed many years ago so it is no longer possible. Robert Hope.
Friday 03/04/1987, 1520 hours at Whitchurch (Shropshire). Set TS625 has just arrived with the 1450 service from Shrewsbury which terminates at Whitchurch. The driver has reversed TS625 to the crossover and is now moving to the southbound platform ready to form the 1525 service to Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton. 53106 leads the set. The view looks north to Crewe. Robert Hope.
On 16 April 1987, the Thursday before Easter Sunday, a Class 116 (with a 127 centre car) and Class 117 are seen approaching Southall, with what could be an Easter relief to Southall. Chris McKee.
Hybrid 116/101/116 3-car dmu set TS626 (53093 and presumably 59115 + 53818) in BR Rail Blue & Grey with all yellow front ends, with another pair of 3-car units (9 cars altogether!) at Newport on a Cardiff - Leicester service, 07/85. Hugh Llewelyn.
TS627 (presumably 53061 + 59613 + 53092) and TS634 (?) near St Georges, Cardiff Central on blind, with unidentified down working on 24 August 1985. Stuart Mackay Collection.
After 55000 had shunted from platform 1 to 2 at Stratford-upon-Avon on 16 May 1986 an arrival from Birmingham Moor Street was allowed to enter the station ready to form the 08.26 back to Birmingham. Tyseley class 116 unit T627 formed of 53061 + 59613 + 53092 is shown here passing the inner home signal with the starters for platform 3 and the Cold Store siding on the right of the picture. Half of Stratford East (sometimes wrongly called Stratford North) signalbox is just visible at the back of the 3 car unit. Peter Tandy.
