Class 117 DMU sets L722+L703 at Braunstone Gate Sidings, Leicester on February 19, 1994. Doing what the BLS (Branch Line Society) did best crunching the rust on sections of the network rarely reached by other railtour operators. Here class 117 DMU sets L722 (51345+51387) & L703 (51359+51401) coupled behind disgorge their passengers into the remnants of Leicester Braunstone Gate Sidings for a photo stop on the "Radlett Roundabout" railtour. This line being the former Great Central Railway route into the city from the south but truncated as a branch after the Beeching closures, its final days being to serve Vic Berry's scrapyard using a curve added by BR in 1965 off the Coalville freight line linking the former Midland and GC lines together. The whole area has since been redeveloped with no trace of the railway remaining. Adrian Nicholls.
Class 117 2-Car DMU set L704 at Watford Junction on March 19th 1994. The DMU was formed of driving cars 51383 & 51341, originally a 3-car set with an intermediate trailer car, the unit had been built by Pressed Steel in 1959. Martyn Hilbert.

Pressed Steel set 117314 (presumably 51394 + 59489 + 51352) arrives into Edinburgh Waverley with a service from Kirkcaldy on April 4, 1994. Hamish Stevenson.
With the shunt signal cleared, NSE class 117 set L721 formed 51405 & 51363 trails L706 (51408 & 51366) out of Bletchley station to the carriage sidings. Robert Chilton.
NSE class 117 set no. L706 formed 51408 & 51366 leads L721 (51405 & 51363) out of Bletchley station. The destination from the last working is still shown: Barking - Gospel Oak; the units are in fact bound for Bletchley carriage sidings. Robert Chilton.

The Bank Holiday Monday on 2 May 1994 saw some Birmingham to Stratford-upon-Avon trains formed of DMMUs rather than the usual class 150 sprinters. Here is a mixed formation (two power-triples, T351 on the rear) led by Network South East liveried L713 (presumably 51391) passing the long-gone Stratford down distant signal between the two bridges at Bishopton in the days before Stratford Parkway station was even a vague thought in someone's mind. This signal was rarely raised to the clear position; in steam days virtually everything stopped at Stratford either for water or to pick up passengers and even in the days when the line saw diesel hauled freight it would have been necessary for the Evesham Road crossing gates to have been closed and the road set to allow this to happen. Peter Tandy.
A 117 set in use for driver training at Perth station on the 5th May 1994. DMS 51395 visible. Hamish Stevenson.
117211 at Culloden 08/05/94 5Z61 1545 Inverness - Perth. The set, returning from Inverness after having NRN radio equipment added at the depot, had recently had the centre car re-instated and would become 117311 (presumably 51334 + 59500 + 51376). Roddy MacPhee.
117213 (presumably 51382 + 59492 + 51339) heading north at Moy on 08/05/94 5Z60 1125 Perth - Inverness for NRN fitment at Inverness TMD. Roddy MacPhee.
The Branch Line Society's "Devonport Docker" DMU railtour traverses the Looe branch connection through Liskeard Goods Yard on May 29th 1994 operated by 117305 (51368 + 59520 + 51410). What should have been one of the highlight of the tour was withdrawn from the itinerary by BR at very short notice. The line had always been on the "banned" list because of a perceived risk of buffer locking but it did seem the BLS had at last got approval to take a passenger train over the connection between the mainline and the branch with this tour. It wasn't to be though and the line was one of two lines withdrawn from the tour route a few days before it ran. The other rather unfortunately was the Keyham Junction to Devonport Dockyard branch after which the tour was named. As the tour still had approval to visit the freight only Moorswater branch off the Looe line the DMU set is seen being run ECS between Liskeard mainline platforms and the Looe branch bay. Adrian Nicholls.
