In its last few months of operation, a BRCW Class 118 Suburban three-car DMU formed of cars 51320, 59482 & 51305 (463) was stood at Starcross with a Paignton to Exeter St Davids service on June 2nd 1989. Based at Plymouth Laira Depot, the set was one of a variety of first generation DMU's that had an extended period of operation in the West Country due to the Class 142 'Skipper' fleet being transferred to the North. The first generation units lasted until sufficient Class 150/2 Sprinters became available. Martyn Hilbert.
Gloucester Eastgate on 15/7/72 - three years before closure with a class 118 unit (set B477, presumably 51321 + 59473 + 51306) on a Swindon to Cheltenham service. Rationalisation was already taking place with only the island platform in use. A long miserable footbridge often frequented by pigeons doing what they know best linked Eastgate with Central station. A battered looking class 118 DMS no. 51321 leading Tyseley's set T316 (51321 - 59473 - 51306) on a service to Leamington Spa at Warwick.
