Cars 51087 59040 53847 are seen awaiting departure from the then platform 5 at Newcastle with an evening commuter service, 16/9/87. The front car is Class 119, the other two are Class 116. Adjacent in the then platform 4 are Mk 1 coaches (distinguishable from DMU stock by the window frames and Commonwealth bogies), probably a locomotive-hauled Pacer substitution - these were invariably three coaches in length, and their positioning relative to the DMU suggests a locomotive may be 'trapped' at the buffer stops. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Class 119 DMS(L) E51102 with Class 116 cars 59364 and 53856 stand in what was then platform 7 (now platform 1) of Newcastle station. Surprisingly, the car number can be seen to include the E-prefix - at a time when the regional prefixing was being abandoned - yet the former Cardiff Division set formation number C591 has been left on the front of the cab. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Left: Class 101 DMBS E53250; Right: Class 119 DMBC 51059, seen at Newcastle on 23/09/1987. Class 143 Pacer problems in the north-east saw an influx of first generation DMUs to Heaton (HT) depot in the weeks leading up to the October 1987 timetable change (05/10/1987), including vehicles of Classes 116, 118 and 119 – none of which had previously operated anywhere near the north-east – as well as some rather tatty Class 101s from diverse regions. These unusual types were eliminated from the area by Spring 1988 when loco-haulage restarted. Graeme Phillips Collection.
A western region class 119 well off its patch, at Hexham in Northumberland. This was during a period when various units were drafted into Heaton depot to cover for problems with class 143 Pacers and in this case several sets have been split and recombined - 51059 from C591 at this end with 59471 (class 118) and 53909 (class 116) from set C316 at the other end. 30/Sep/1987. Robert Chilton.
An unusual sight of a Class 119 at Battersby, North Yorkshire, on the rural Esk Valley line between Middlesbrough and Whitby. Taken on on the 09/10/1987, closest is 51058, the car furthest from the camera is a suburban type, either Class 116 or 118. Graeme Phillips Collection.
