Two Gloucester Cross-Country sets at Westbury. Maybe late 1950s, as the two domes look cleanish. The set on left has lost a wiper. Stuart Mackay Collection.

A Western Region publicity image (negative 55A 59) showing a GRC&W Cross-Country DMU at the fuelling point at St Phillips Marsh, Bristol. British Railways.
This was a picture Peter never printed, possibly because it was just a DMU and around this time, 01/03/1959, steam was everywhere and Snow Hill would never close. The perspective of 2013 is different, Snow Hill has closed and re-opened, the dreaded new DMU has been replaced twice, first by the class 150 and latterly by the class 172 and the two chaps will be late 70's early 80's by now. Why there was such a lovely light effect is unknown, the new diesels should not have produced that amount of smoke, maybe a steam hauled freight had gone through centre road, we will never know and Peter never saw it. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

A GRC&W Cross-Country DMU seen in Birmingham Moor Street at 3.03pm on 13 January 1962 after arriving with a local service. Michael might have taken this image if it was the first yellow panel he saw - this was a very early application. Looking at the shine on the cab corner, only the lower half of the cab has been painted, the green having to be applied to cover the whiskers which spread wide than the yellow. Michael Mensing.
A Hymek and GRC&W Cross-Country DMU (on a Clevedon service) in Yatton station circa 1963. Image by Derek Chaplin. Peter Brabham Collection.
A GRC&W Cross-Country DMU in BR green with yellow "whiskers" (before yellow warning panels were introduced) leaving Swansea (High St) on a service to Carmarthen, Summer 1963. Scanned photograph taken by myself with a Brownie 127, hence quality is not the best! Hugh Llewelyn.

A GRC&W Cross-Country power twin at Bath Spa on 26 October 1963. Walter Burt Collection.
Unfortunately this unhurried scene at Cheltenham Landsdown Road is undated but that in no way lessens the charm. The platform signal box has the windows open, so the sound of block bells and levers being pulled would be very audible. A green livery GRC&W Cross-Country dmu with small yellow warning panel is drawn up at platform 2. The date could be around 1964. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
