I took what was a mundane photo at the time in order to document the initial stages of the rebuilding of Guildford station, and already in this 7th September 1988 scene, the roof on the western side of the long footbridge had already been removed, and hoarding put in place, presumably to protect the flower bed of roses. It was also a livery transitional period, for the furthest of the two Gloucester Class 119 Cross-Country units, on a Reading-Gatwick Airport diagram, being in the Network South East Livery. The nearest unit L576 (51062-59421-51090) still retained its BR blue and grey livery, but with a NSE decal on the front. The parcels trolley and battery-powered prime mover (with a flat tyre!) is also of interest, signifying that handling of mail and parcels traffic was still an everyday occurrence at Guildford, indeed right through until the mid-1990s. Gordon Edgar.
