Class 143 Pacer problems in the north-east saw an influx of first generation DMUs to Heaton (HT) depot in the weeks leading up to the October 1987 timetable change (05/10/1987), including vehicles of Classes 116, 118 and 119 – none of which had previously operated anywhere near the north-east – as well as some rather tatty Class 101s from diverse regions. These unusual types were eliminated from the area by Spring 1988 when loco-haulage restarted. Graeme Phillips Collection.

This was during a period when various units were drafted into Heaton depot to cover for problems with class 143 Pacers and in this case several sets have been split and recombined - 51059 from C591 at this end with 59471 (class 118) and 53909 (class 116) from set C316 at the other end. 30/Sep/1987. Class 119 unit L575 (51060 + 59419 + 51088) was pulling away from Radley in Oxfordshire after dropping off some commuters with an afternoon stopping service from London Paddington to Oxford on 4 July 1989. The alignment of the long-gone Abingdon branch along with its platform edging can be seen in what was the not very busy car park. Peter Tandy.
