A few hours spent watching a variety of DMU types by the North Downs in August 1989. Class 119 Gloucester Cross Country DMU L575 (W51060 + W59419 + W51088) rasps up the 1 in 100 gradient from Redhill towards Reigate with a Gatwick Airport to Reading service. Murray Liston.
Taken just beyond Wokingham station on 25 May 1990, Class 119 set L575 formed of 51060 + 59419 + 51088 is working a Reading to Gatwick as it passes the junction for the electrified London Waterloo line in the late afternoon. Fond though I am of First Generation DMUs it wasn't these that were my target on this occasion; the Theale to Northfleet empty cement tanks hauled by 33009 + 33029 was my primary reason for me being there and unlike on a couple of subsequent visits I was lucky that it ran. Peter Tandy.

The annual Spalding Flower Parade would bring many specials to the town and on 7 May 1983 we see two Class 119 sets, including L576 (51062 + 59421 + 51090) either coming out or in of the sidings at Spalding. The sign in the window notes it was Chiltern Trains 1Z49. The July 1983 Railway Observer (p270) notes this as running from West Ruislip with the second set being L578 (51092 + 59423 + 51064). Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 119 sets L576 and L578 have either come out of or are about to enter the empty siding on the right. They are at Spalding on a Flower Parade special from West Ruislip on 7 May 1983. Class 119 set B577 (presumably 51063 + 59422 + 51091) heads out of Worcester Foregate Street in the late 1960s / early 1970s. Whilst most DMUs went from green livery to blue livery from the late 1960s, Cross-Country (Classes 119 and 120) and Inter-City (Classes 123 and 126) types (including Trans-Pennine Class 124) generally went straight into blue & grey livery, thus they carried this livery with many original fitting such as headcodes (which were normally removed later). Going against the trend, some Scottish region Class 120 and 126 units carried blue livery, whilst some Western region Class 101 units that were deployed on Cross-Country services went straight from green livery to blue & grey, long before the livery became standard for the class. Graeme Phillips Collection.
