Crossmyloof 30th December 1987. The Ayr Electrics had started as I arrived the year before in Ayrshire. In 1987, the Stranraers, Kilmarnocks and East Kilbride services were still first generation DMU out of Glasgow Central. This was their swansong before the Sprinters arrived. Ayr and Corkerhill depots were working miracles. Even as the 156s started, the plans to reopen Carmyle and Paisley Canal ensured that the final end for Class 101 was some years off. But back to 1987 IIRC the DMU choice was 101/104/105/107/116/120 with three livery choices. This set is all blue/grey but what was meant to be an Ayr 3 car 101 has a class 120 at the back - 53654. The TBSL centre car is presumably 59112. Robert Forsythe.

On 28th January 1988 a lorry toppled from the A736 road bridge over the G&SW line at the south end of Uplawmoor, some of its load falling onto the track derailing the leading vehicle 10:45 Kilmarnock to Glasgow Central. There were no casualties amongst the 30 passengers, the lorry driver was unhurt. It was worked by a hybrid set, Class 101 DMBS 51248 (leading, it would be withdrawn afterwards), a Class 101 TBSL and a Class 120 DMSL. The 120 on the rear of the set can be seen in the distance where the train came to a rest. John Reddyhoff.
