31 407 rolls into the now closed Lincoln St.Marks station with the 15.18 Cleethorpes to Newark Northgate on August 20, 1983. A three car Swindon Cross Country DMU (set EP522 - M53678 + M59293 + M53714) awaits departure from Bedford Midland with the 16:21 service to Kettering on Friday 29th July 1983. By this date the Midland main line had been electrified as far as Bedford and these trains provided an onward connection to Kettering. Brian McDevitt.

On a damp June 29th 1985, a Derby Etches Park (EP522) Swindon 'Cross-Country' Class 120 DMU, with Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M53678 leading, was stabled between duties in the now removed bay platform on the East side of Stafford station alongside Railway Street. This was taken during the period of the Crewe Remodelling project when no trains were serving Crewe and many services were starting and terminating at Stafford, with all through services on the WCML using the normally freight only Crewe Independent Lines that bypass Crewe station. A pair of Swindon built Class 120 'Cross-Country' Driving Motor Brake Composites, M53714 & M53713 in use as a parcels/mail unit, was stabled in Croft Street Sidings at Preston on August 31st 1986. The nearest car, M53714 had once been part of a Derby Etches Park allocated three-car set EP522. New in April 1958, M53714 & M53713 were taken out of passenger use in January 1986 and in February 1986, the two-car set was allocated to Chester for parcels/mail duties. The pair of cars were finally withdrawn in April 1987 and scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.
