Rush hour, Bearley Junction. Single car 55004 calls at Bearley Junction with the 10.00 Leamington - Stratford service on 10/01/1981. The guard does not look happily upon the photographer as he braves the cold air from safety of his luggage compartment, his smart uniform is slightly detracted by a non standard flat cap. A general view of the DMU sidings at the east end of Haymarket depot on the afternoon of Sunday 15.3.81. Notice the mixture of classes (122, 101 and 105) present. From the left and from front to rear, the following are visible : 55000/59074/50160, 51476/59072/..., 51473, 51806/59088/51474. Also to notice is how, from around late 1978 onwards, once the decision had been made to ditch plain blue on multiple units with any sort of life expectancy, St Rollox just went ahead and painted everything in blue/grey, including classes 104 and 105. On the Eastern and Midland these tended to remain in plain blue on the whole because of their short life expectancy. Leonard Rogers.

Set: L102

Class 122 single car unit TDB975540, the Western Region Route Learning Saloon, set L102, reverses at Gloucester on 20th March 1981. The 'Bubble Cars' as they became affectionately known, were essentially a Class 116 Driving Motor Brake Second with a cab at both ends. This unit was built by the Gloucester Carriage & Wagon Co. and entered service as W55016 in July 1958, allocated to Southall depot. November 1975 saw it enter departmental service, where it remained as a route learning vehicle, until withdrawn in May 1993. It was disposed of by MC Metals in Glasgow in the July of that year. With its 'bull horns' prominent, class 122 single car DMU TDB975540, the Western Region Route Learning Saloon set L102, 'charges' into Gloucester on 20 March 1981. The 'Bubble Cars' as they became affectionately known, were essentially a class 116 Driving Motor Brake Second with a cab at both ends. This unit was built by the Gloucester Carriage & Wagon Co. and entered service as W55016 in July 1958, allocated to Southall depot.
