Single-Car DMU's class 122 55003 and class 121 55034 set back from platform 1 in order to access platform 3, having arrived at Stratford-upon-Avon with a Leamington service on 11 April 1987. 47613 'North Star' has brought in an Intercity charter from London. Chris Morrison.
Two bubbles, 55003 (leading) and 55034, at Stratford-upon-Avon on Saturday 11 April 1987. In the down goods line is 47 610, sent by Saltley to shunt a steam special hauled by 35028 Clan Line. Peter Tandy.
Corby station on 13 April 1987, the day that services were restored after the original Corby station had closed in 1966. Single units 55004/55011 are awaiting a return to Kettering - the restored service comprised only a shuttle service to Kettering, with one or two trains each day being extended back to Bedford. The service was restored on an "experimental basis", but this experiment was deemed a failure, and Corby station closed again on 2 June 1990. It was to be nearly another 19 years before proposals to re-open Corby came to fruition, with East Midlands Trains introducing through trains to St Pancras on 23 February 2009. Lewis Bevan.
Class 122 single unit M55004 (built by the Gloucester RC & W Co in 1958) at Kettering with the 09.13 service to Corby on 16 April 1987. This was the day that services were restored to Corby after a gap of 21 years, the station having been closed in April 1966 when regular passenger trains over the Oakham-Kettering line were withdrawn. The 1987 re-opening was on an "experimental" basis, and services were withdrawn again as from 2 June 1990. This closure left Corby as, allegedly, the largest town in Europe without a rail service, and, in the ensuing years, there were various proposals for trains to serve Corby once again. But it would be nearly 19 years until East Midlands Trains re-introduced a regular service, including through trains to London, to the town. Lewis Bevan.
Almost 21 years to the day since Corby station had closed in 1966, rail services were reinstated. Trains shuttled between Kettering and Corby, provided by dmus based at Bletchley and operated by Network SouthEast. Initially there were two Gloucester RCW class 122 "bubble cars" dedicated to the service, embellished with the Corby coat of arms. Here, in the first week of service, M55004 climbs out of Kettering with an afternoon train on 16/4/87. New signals are in place but there are still four tracks, a situation that will change at the end of 1987. The "Jockloper" lasted barely more than three years, though in 2008 a more permanent service again re-connected Corby to the outside world. Mike Dean.
Class 122 route learner 975540 heads north through Great Goytre, between Abergavenny and Pontrilas on 17th April 1987. It may well have been on a road learning trip for Crewe Drivers, who at that time didn't sign the route south of Hereford, in preparation for the introduction of Sprinters on the route. Paul James.

Class 122 single unit 55009 was working a Leamington Spa to Stratford-upon-Avon service when I photographed it on the misty lunchtime of 24 April 1987. The picture was taken from the new bridge being built over the line near Bishopton as a new stretch of the A46 road was under construction. Behind the camera on the other side of the road is Stratford Parkway station and unusually the shot is still possible in 2023. Peter Tandy.
Single unit 55009 was working on the Stratford-upon-Avon to Leamington Spa shuttles on 1 May 1987. This location on the canal towpath just outside Stratford Station was just the job for a bubble as the unit fitted nicely between all the poles and posts without anything appearing to grow out of its roof. This spot isn't a lot of use in 2023 as the undergrowth has flourished. Peter Tandy.
I was a frequent visitor to Stratford-upon-Avon East signalbox when the late Mick Lloyd was on duty. This shot of class 122s 55012 + 55009 was taken looking towards the station on 1 May 1987 as the single car units were on the 12.12 to Leamington Spa. Peter Tandy.

Double bubble. 55000 & 55006, having formed the 13.11 arrival from Stratford Upon Avon, wait at Leamington Spa on 06/05/87. Steve Jones.
On May 9, 1987, a month after the passenger service to Corby had been re-instated, Class 122 55004 takes a full load past Corby North box (south of Corby station!) on its way to Kettering and connection with the outside world. Mike Dean.
On 25 May 1987 I was on the tower of Shrewsbury Castle ready for a shot of D200 working a Cardiff to Crewe service. Shortly before this came along BR blue single unit, 975042, forming part of the departmental fleet. As it arrived at the station looking a bit dwarfed by its surroundings, including the Severn Bridge Junction signal box, there was no other traffic in sight save the 08 shunter. In the 2021 the signal box benefitted from a £250,000 refurbishment which, in times gone by, would quite possibly have meant imminent closure! Peter Tandy.
