Set: 52

E51952 has a freshly painted front end when seen at Brough on the rear of a Trans-Pennine service to Hull on 2nd September 1983. The repainting had been done at BG after a minor bump. The window rubbers, normally left black, were painted as they had a fair amount of paint on them already. The unit has the number "52" hand-painted on the front, 51961 and 51964 also had numbers painted on the front end. It has had red bulbs installed in the old headcode panel, presumably to prevent damage to the nicely painted lamp-brackets! Syd Young.

On a cold grey afternoon one of the Hull Botanic Gardens based Trans Pennine "hybrid" DMU sets formed of class 123 and 124 vehicles calls at Doncaster with the 12.45 Manchester Piccadilly to Cleethorpes on January 28, 1984. The rear vehicle (nearest) is a class 124 'Trans Pennine' and originally part of the order delivered in 1960 when the class ran as 6-car sets with four powered vehicles giving a formidable power to weight ratio for the hilly Trans Pennine routes. Their Leyland Albion engines developing 1840hp for a full 6-car train set. Not being considered for the early 1980's DMU life extension overhauls condemned both classes to early withdrawal as they were insulated with blue asbestos. 1984 being their final year in service with most withdrawn by the spring timetable change when their diagrams went over to class 31/4's on loco hauled stock.
