Passing New Mills South Junction on the 18th April 1984 is a Hull Botanic Gardens (BG) based 1960 Swindon built class 124 Trans Pennine dmu with a Manchester Piccadilly-Hull Paragon service. These units were all taken out of service the following month and their duties taken over by class 31/4 locomotive hauled services. Andrew J Crowther.

Class 124 51960 leads a Hull - Manchester service through Chinley on the 28th April 1984. Originally operated as 6 car sets, this was the final formation with a 124 at one end and a 123 at the other. Mike Dean.
The class 124 'Trans-Pennine' DMUs worked from Hull from their initial introduction in 1959 to their enventual demise in the mid-80s. Trans-Pennine 51953 leads a four-car set hammering through Bamford in the Hope Valley on a Hull to Manchester working. When new, these Swindon built units operated in 6 car formation between Liverpool and Hull. They were replaced, largely from the start of the summer '84 timetable by Class 31s, newly fitted with electric train heating. Taken on April 28, 1984. Mike Dean.
Class 124 DMCL E51967 on Darnall depot circa early 1985. Asbestos contaminated vehicles were taken there after withdrawal for boarding up (and component recovery?) before their final journey to the scrapyard, which for this vehicle would be at Snailwell. Mike Bunker.
