On a cold grey afternoon one of the Hull Botanic Gardens based Trans Pennine "hybrid" DMU sets formed of class 123 and 124 vehicles calls at Doncaster with the 12.45 Manchester Piccadilly to Cleethorpes on January 28, 1984. The rear vehicle (nearest) is a class 124 'Trans Pennine' and originally part of the order delivered in 1960 when the class ran as 6-car sets with four powered vehicles giving a formidable power to weight ratio for the hilly Trans Pennine routes. Their Leyland Albion engines developing 1840hp for a full 6-car train set. Not being considered for the early 1980's DMU life extension overhauls condemned both classes to early withdrawal as they were insulated with blue asbestos. 1984 being their final year in service with most withdrawn by the spring timetable change when their diagrams went over to class 31/4's on loco hauled stock.
