Sc51047 COND at Thornhill, March 1982. Sc51047 in a rake of withdrawn Swindon DMU vehicles at Thornhill sidings in transit to their final destination, the boarded up windows indicating that the vehicle is contaminated with blue asbestos. When researching the scrapping date for this vehicle I discovered that Sc51047 was involved in an accident at Kyle Street Sidings (adjacent to Ayr station) 20/6/61. The set had been routed into a siding containing four tank wagons instead of into an adjacent empty siding. The cab front was quite badly stoved in. The vehicle was repaired and remained in service until 11/81. Andrew McConnell.

End of Days. Swindon Inter-City Sets stored at Ayr Townhead Yard. 126 418 is one of the few with the identity displayed on the DMSL (presumably Sc51025). The DMSL to the right looks suspiciously like preserved Sc51017 which may have been part of 126 408 at that time. Summer 1982. alicia hartman.
A class 126 formation and a class 37 are seen at the site of Shields Road Station on 01-06-1982. The rear class 126 vehicle is DMS(L) Sc51008. The Swindon units by this time being phased out, but all the available units were pressed into service for special trains in connection with the Pope's visit to Glasgow on this day. The units were stored during the day in Smithy Lye, on the other side of the Shields Road bridge, behind the photo location. Andrew McConnell.
The Papal visit to Bellahouston Park in 1982 required the use of a large number of extra trains - as a result most of the then surviving Class 126 units were mobilised. Sc51026 is seen here in the (now former) carriage sidings at Smithy Lye on 01/06/82. As the DMBS vehicle determines the unit number, it was unusual for a Swindon DMS to carry a set number. Andrew McConnell.

Taken from the signalbox, two Class 126s are seen in one of the Dalry station slow line platforms in June 1982. The slide recorded it as a Glasgow - Ayr service, but it could have been a Dalry-Largs “Shuttle”. Stuart Mackay Collection.

DMUs stabled in Kyle Street Sidings (which was next to Ayr station) circa mid-1982. On the left is Met-Camm set 101335 with 59567 and 51804 visible, they face a Class 107. On the right is a Class 126 with 51042 closest. John Horne.
Sc51036 in Kyle Street sidings (behind Ayr station) in August 1982. At this time the class had gone past their BR "sell by" date and almost all of the class lay out of use. 126 406 and 413 (behind) were both withdrawn and reinstated 8/82 and became the only two sets to survive past the end of the month, remaining in service until January of the following year. (Panoramic composite of previously submitted image). Andrew McConnell.
51012 awaits its fate after withdrawal. The boarded up windows were a sign it was an asbestos contaminated vehicle. At Falkland Yard in August 1982. Andrew McConnell.
