 DMU

circa 1960

A 117 or 118? This negative was just marked as circa 1960. It shows a suburban set with Didcot on the destination blind and is thought to be on the line from Oxford, possibly at Radley. Round buffers were unusual at this time, and only the DMBS is lined. Pressed Steel tended to put the coaching crest under the fourth large window - as in this example, GRC&W would put it one bay further back under the two half windows. Stuart Mackay Collection.

 DMU

circa 1960

"Bold departure from convention at Oxford Rd station, Manchester". Taken from an article on the Manchester - Crewe AC electrification and modernisation that appeared in the October 1960 British Transport Commission magazine "Transport Age" and highlighting this important scheme that helped lay the foundation for much of the later electrification and modernisation work undertaken by British Railways. As part of this work the station of the south side of Manchester city centre, at Oxford Road, was reconstructed using a very contemporary architectural style with the old buildings replaced by the current largely timber structure by architects W.R. Headley and Max Glendinning and structural engineer Hugh Tottenham. It is now Grade 2 Listed and is seen here with both overhead wires and a BRC&W DMU. Scan and notes courtesy of Mike Ashworth. British Railways.

 DMU

circa 1959/1960

This is a train from Liverpool Lime Street entering Chester General; taken about 1959 or 1960. There was a regular train service between the two cities via Runcorn; I traveled on it a number of times, and it always seemed to be on a Cravens set. The service was worked from the Liverpool end, and I've always assumed that these Cravens sets were based on Merseyside, perhaps at Allerton; however, I'm sure they had all gone from Lime Street by 1960 - from what I remember, local services were worked by class 108s by that time, mainly ones with roof mounted four-position route indicators. David Faircloth.

These are of my 120 trip to St Combs. A contact in the GNSR group does not know of another 120 visit, so it is likely to be rare, if not unique. Eric Stuart.

A DMU calls at Swan Village station, West Bromwich, circa 1960, and seems to be a 3-car set with an extra DMS (or DTS) attached at the front. Swan Village was situated on the GWR main line from Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level. The train is heading in the Birmingham direction and in the distance can be seen Hill Top tunnel, beyond which lies Wednesbury and the route to Wolverhampton. Original photo by the late John Evans.
