An official image (Derby Works, negative unknown). No details other than 'inside one of the new diesel trains'. Some detective work - it's a Derby Lightweight, the seating is from the 79xxx era. It's a DMBS (floor hatches and partition into the van). There is no small rear saloon and LMR style seating, which means it should be one of the 46 vehicles built to diagram 633 and initially used in Birmingham, Manchester and North Wales. British Railways.
A Derby Works / London Midland Region publicity image (negative N1009) showing a DMBS interior probably populated with BR staff. It seems to be a later yellow diamond Derby Lightweight (the rectangular vents in the ceiling and the adjacent car seems to have the horizontal split in the windscreen). Date unknown, circa 1956. British Railways.

The interior of a Derby Lightweight vehicle, Derby Works negative 56/947. There are no details with the image but it is intended to show the paneling on the bulkhead. The high back seats indicate it is an LMR vehicle, the lack of floor hatches and first class indicate a DTCL. Only one small batch had the 2+2 seating in first class lot 30322 to Diagram 511 with vehicles M79670-84. British Railways.
Livery experiment. This official image (Derby Works negative 56/27) records a trial of warning markings on the front end of a Derby Lightweight vehicle circa February 1956. British Railways.
Livery experiment. This official image (Derby Works negative 56/25) records a trial of warning markings on the front end of a Derby Lightweight vehicle circa February 1956. This is unlikely to be a new vehicle - there is signs of paint retouching just about the gutter, and a new vehicle would have a white cab dome at this time. British Railways.

Two two-car Derby Lightweight sets head out of Newcastle with a Middlesbrough service. The date is unknown, they appear reasonably clean so probably taken soon after delivery (new in March 1956), they were intended for Hexham sevices later in the year. British Railways.

The supplied caption reads: "A two car diesel train in an attractive country setting approaching Whitlingham on the Norwich-Mundesely service. A Derby Works image (negative 56/426) showing construction work underway on Derby Lightweights circa June 1956. The closest gentleman is assembling a destination blind wooden box, the second is working with the wiring for the jumper sockets. The first vehicle is unidentified but the second - with the cab and van at the same end and a full size window behind the van - can only be M79900. British Railways.

This seems to be one of the four-car Derby Lightweights. Peter left no details on this negative but by the style of dress it would appear to be around 1957, presumably at Platform 10 of Newcastle Central. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
