On 13 April 1985, a three-car "Calder Valley" class 110 diesel set (BRCW, 1961, Rolls Royce engines) arrives at Southport with the 14.20 from Manchester. A Class 108 sits in the sidings. Jeremy Chapter.
A Carlisle-bound Class 108 DMU arriving at Ravenglass, 10 April 1972. Ed Fulton.
Known as Calder Valley sets the class 110's were primarily associated with the Trans Pennine route between Manchester and Leeds, via Halifax and Bradford so slightly unusual to see one at Chesterfield. Despite being an Eastern Region station it was very much Midland mainline territory. Here 2-car set 51814 + 52083 has just arrived with train 2H01 the 07.03 York to Chesterfield on 22 March 1985. It will return as the 09.00 to Sheffield. Adrian Nicholls.
A Met-Camm "Lightweight" DMU in Thetford station. Swaffham is on the destination blind, the direct route closed in June 1964, the yellow panel dates it as 1962 or later. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 101 DMU set TY406 - presumably 50327 - during the Cranmore stop of the RCTS / Dean Forest RPS Somerset Quarryman joint rail tour on 28 September 1974. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A Class 116 and Class 101 in Worcester Shrub Hill, date unknown. The Derby set seems to be TS527, the Met-Camm is a Bristol set. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 122 vehicle 55012 seen at Exeter St Davids on 4 April 1992. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 116 DMU set 116 394 (presumably 53882 + 59345 + 53846) in Ayr depot circa 1985. On the left is a Class 107 set that included centre car 59796. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 107 DMU set 107445 (presumably 52015 closest, the centre car is 59796) in Ayr depot, circa 1985. Inside the shed on the right is 116394. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Two-car Class 120 Swindon Cross-Country DMU set P554, presumably W51575 with W51584, is seen in Gunnislake station. Date unknown, prior to 1976. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Two-car Class 120 Swindon Cross-Country DMU set P554, W51584 and presumably W51575, is seen in Bere Alston station. Date unknown, prior to 1976. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 101 DMU set 98 with Ipswich on the blind passing a track machine (a tamper?) in the siding to the north east of Saxhumdham station. Date unknown, probably in the early 1980s prior to RETB in 1985. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 116 DMBS 53083 carrying set number L208 is standing in for a Class 119 DMS at Oxford in this February 1989 view. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A Metro-Cammell / Cravens unit near Blenkinsopp, not far from Haltwhistle on the Newcastle - Carlisle line, working the 17.42 Carlisle - Newcastle on 08/06/1981. Geoff Dowling.
A Swindon built Inter-City unit (class 123) is on the through fast at Kings Norton. Thought to be taken circa 1963/64, and 1V72 should be the 5.20pm Derby to Cardiff. The station is intact with the buildings on the centre platform in use. The gas lamp is intriguing, it looks as if it is a more modern replacement for a lantern, judging by the bracket. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
Commuters, Yardley Wood station, 12/12/1981. Then, as now, Yardley Wood station is a busy local station on the Stratford - Birmingham Line. The 09.19 Stratford - Birmingham Moor Street is being worked by a Derby Class 116 containing DMBS 53072, it partners are presumably TS509 regulars 50105 + 59009. Geoff Dowling.
Relief at Vigo, 12/12/1981. On a snowy December day the normal timetable had 'gone out of the window' so it was good to see a Metro-Cammell on a Worcester - Birmingham relief service. Vigo is situated about 2/3rds up the notorious Lickey incline and the DMU was down to walking pace at this point. The set was noted as containing 50319 so this DMCL could be 50335. Geoff Dowling.
A cold night at Shirley station, pausing briefly is a very mixed unit on the 18.41 Birmingham Moor St - Stratford-upon-Avon, 8/12/1981. With Class 100 DMBS M51119 on the rear with set number TS414, the other two vehicles are presumably Class 101 59543 and Class 100 DMBS 51110. Geoff Dowling.
Passenger and freight at Whitlock's End. Pannier tank 9682, a stalwart of 84E Tyseley shed, is in charge of a pick-up freight from Stratford upon Avon. At Whitlock's End station a brand new DMU is heading for Henley-in-Arden, it's white roof unblemished and speed whiskers not added. This is a Derby suburban 2nd series set with 2 character reporting code box, (B0) on this, these were in service by 1958. Whitlock's End (Halt) was a little used station built entirely from wood, it had a footpath that ran along the embankment top (still there but 'difficult') Today the station has been totally rebuilt with disabled access ramps and direct steps to the massive car park, the field to the right on this shot. Trains now terminate here giving a service to Birmingham every 20 minutes and to Stratford every hour. The DMU in this picture was replaced by Pacer units (class 150) in the mid 1980's these in turn, were phased out by Class 172 units. Image tak Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
