The expanse of Manchester's Piccadilly terminus can be appreciated in this panoramic view from the footbridge, dating from 14 September 1984. Both 25kV and 1500V dc electrics, and diesel multiple unit motive power can be seen. On the left a Class 304 unit is on a Crewe service and a Class 506 unit is on a Hadfield service on the right. The DMU with the black stripe across the front is carrying the marking "EXP DM 352" below the cab window (and formed of M78601 + 78851), the Class 104 to the left has a blue/grey centre car. Five years after the closure of the Woodhead route, Class 108/101 hybrid DMU on a Huddersfield-Sheffield service leaves Penistone station and trundles across what remains of Huddersfield Junction. Track recovery and gantry demolition began in earnest on this section the following year, 1987. Andrew Walker.

This Cravens dmu, bearing a "Special" destination blind, was stabled at the back of Doncaster station on 28th July 1984. This was a departmental set, nos. TDB977123/977125. The vantage point for my photograph was the footbridge connecting the station to the locomotive works, which was used on that day for access on the occasion of the Works Open Day. Another Cravens DMU is on the left the DMBS being E51278. Andrew Walker.

Probably not bound for Hull, despite the destination blind, this is a Cravens dmu in the bay at the south end of Doncaster station in May 1980. The leading car is no. 56438. Andrew Walker.

A sunny but frosty morning in Lincoln sees a two-car Class 114 DMU roll across High Street level crossing and into Central station in March 1986. In the distance beyond the tower block, the crossing box at East Holmes can just be seen. Andrew Walker.

This is a view of Lincoln Central station looking westwards from Pelham Bridge. A Class 114 dmu leaves the station in the direction of Market Rasen, while Class 08 no. 08102 stands on one of the through roads. On the right can be seen 31203 and 37106 in the bay platforms. Tuesday 10/02/1976 sees a Class 101/111 DMU pass through the disused Sheffield Victoria station with a Sheffield-Huddersfield service. Part of the Woodhead route, this station was closed on 05/01/1970. Graeme Phillips Collection.
