A Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50772 at the rear, was awaiting departure from Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on May 15th 1981. The Newton Heath allocated Power-Twin sets were once synonymous with the ex L&Y lines in Lancashire and were regular performers on the East Lancashire route from Preston to Colne. Just visible in the distance is the brick bridge that takes the M6 Motorway across the railway. The bridge was the first to carry a Motorway across a railway in the UK, with the M6 Preston By-Pass between Bamber Bridge (now junction 29) and Broughton (now junction 32) that opened in December 1958. Martyn Hilbert.
A BRCW Class 104 two-car DMU formed of cars M53520 & M53536 (N678) was awaiting departure from Parbold with a Southport to Manchester Victoria service on May 14th 1988. At the time the set was allocated to Newton Heath, but in May 1989 for its last stint of operation, the set was transferred to Chester from where it would eventually be withdrawn a few months later in October 1989. The Ayr Depot allocation sticker on the cab front was a souvenir of a brief period operating North of the Border in 1984, providing cover following a fire at Ayr Depot that destroyed a number of DMU sets beyond repair. Later in 1984, until reallocated back to familiar territory at Newton Heath in 1987, the set had been allocated to Cricklewood Depot. Martyn Hilbert.

The unit was one of many first generation sets given an extended life due to the then ongoing issues with the Class 142 Pacer fleet. Martyn Hilbert.
