The Met-Camm Ultrasonic Test Train at Crewe on 12 May 1997. The power cars are 977391 + 977392, they are working with a Mark I as a centre car which has a pantograph - probably 'Mentor'. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A six-car DMU formation heading south on the Settle and Carlisle line at Baron Wood, north of Lazonby & Kirkoswald, on 2 August 1989. Closest is a Class 101/108 hybrid, 53250 and presumably 53644, working with two Met-Camm twins. The River Eden can be seen on the left. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Gloucester Class 122 single-unit 55012 (112) was arriving at Starcross with the 17.07 Plymouth to Honiton service on May 30th 1991. Following withdrawal from passenger use, 55012 became a departmental route-learning car numbered 977941 and became the only railcar to carry LoadHaul livery. It was sold for preservation in 2009 and is currently at the Weardale Railway. Martyn Hilbert.
A Swindon Class 120 three-car 'Cross-Country' DMU formed of cars W51588, W59588 & W51579 (558), was down to walking pace as it was climbing the Lickey Incline with a Worcester to Birmingham New Street service on September 5th 1981. At the time, the set was allocated to Cardiff Canton, but in the following year, 1982, the set was transferred to the North West operating from Newton Heath Depot. Martyn Hilbert.
With 'Lancaster' on its destination blind, Former Eastern Region/West Yorkshire PTE Class 108 DMU formed of cars 53606 & 54196 was passing Lodge Lane Crossing at Farington with an Ormskirk to Preston service on May 7th 1988. The two-car set had been transferred from Hull Botanic Gardens to Newton Heath in the period when surviving first generation sets were covering for the then ailing Class 142 fleet. Having traversed Farington Moss from Midge Hall, the 108 was about to descend the gradient towards the WCML at Farington Curve Junction. Martyn Hilbert.
With its centre trailer car in blue/grey, a three-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53517, M59168 & M53464 was stood on the Up Fast at Leyland station with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on October 11th 1986. Of the three individual cars, M53464 & M59168 were eventually scrapped, with M53517 surviving into preservation. Martyn Hilbert.
Having climbed the gradient from Farington Curve Junction on the WCML, a two-car Class 104/108 hybrid DMU formed of cars M53501 & M53934 was passing Lodge Lane Crossing on Farington Moss with a lunchtime Preston to Ormskirk service on January 7th 1988. In the foreground is the part dismantled former Up Line that was taken out of use in 1983, prior to which double track had been retained from Farington Curve Junction to Midge Hall. The DMU is passing through the site of the one-time Moss Lane Junction, where until 1972 there was a direct link from the Ormskirk route that connected with the East Lancashire line at the top of Farington Curve. Martyn Hilbert.
Complete with its first class saloon, Derby built Class 108 Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) M56212 (coupled with DMBS M50626), was stabled in the sidings at Llandudno Junction on May 26th 1979. Martyn Hilbert.

Class 119 Cross-Country set B590 (51087 + 59418 + 51058) was entering Droitwich Spa station with a Birmingham New Street (via Bromsgrove) to Hereford when I took this image on 6 July 1985. The main point of this viewpoint was to include the centre pivot lower quadrant signals in case they were replaced with colour lights in the near future. They weren't, and still are in use in 2024 unlike the trackwork leaving the former coal yard which has long been removed. Peter Tandy.
Class 121 55033 ready to depart from Stratford-upon-Avon with the 12:13 to Leamington Spa on 12 February 1992. Peter Tandy.
Class 121 single car 55033 was the unit selected to be painted into a colourful livery marking the Midline brand. The colour scheme isn't really apparent in this picture of T013 in Stratford-upon-Avon on the murky day of 12 February 1992 especially as the light was so poor there was no point in wasting any slide film on a shot. The unit was working the two-hourly shuttles between Stratford and Leamington and was shortly to leave with 12.13 to the latter. Peter Tandy.
A single unit on Stratford-upon-Avon to Leamington Spa duties, Class 122 55009 pictured from the towpath of the Grand Union canal on 1 July 1985 just after leaving Hatton and having crossed over both main lines from platform 3. Peter Tandy.
I was in Stratford-upon-Avon East signalbox on 29 June 1985 having a chat with the bobby when class 101 TS418 (53310 + 59128 + 53326) left the station with a late afternoon train to Birmingham Moor Street. The bridge in front of the unit shows where the line crosses over the Stratford canal. Peter Tandy.
Class 101 DMU set TS418 (53310 + 59128 + 53326) was stuck on Birmingham to Stratford-upon-Avon trains for at least 3 consecutive days and on the middle day, 30 June 1985, I photographed it passing Wilmcote on the way to Stratford. Peter Tandy.
