The RCTS Gwent railtour on 23 June 1973 at Blaenavon Furnace Sidings. It was formed of Class 119 DMU set B571, 51080 + 59292 + 51052. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 123 power car E52090 with set number 710 in Doncaster station in January 1980. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A refurbished Class 115 DMU at Marylebone. The slide process date was February 1981. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 101 DMU set 74 at Norwich, with a Class 105 in the distance. The slide process date was November 1984. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Three Class 108s, 54221 closest and the retro-green set 53964 + 54247 in the middle, at Appleby station circa 1991. Stuart Mackay Collection.
The wooden platform at Stewartby has only a Tilley lamp to combat the gloom, it should soon be lit on this cold February afternoon. Two passengers are waiting for the fuggy warmth of an old DMU, 50391 and 56148 will soon be rasping towards Bedford with the 15.10 service from Bletchley on 14 February 1981. The building is the boarded up LNWR crossing keeper's house, the keeper now travels to work by road, on the crossing side of his hut there is a ticket window beside the door. Geoff Dowling.
Bearley Visible. The old running-in board at Bearley station has seen much better days, in those far off days it proclaimed "Bearley Junction change for Alcester" The Alcester branch closed to passengers 25/09/1939 although the junction still functioned for freight and later wagon storage. In this picture the station is in a deplorable condition with the platforms covered in a thick weed growth, the brick edge of the bay platform is visible under the name board. 55003 is heading for Stratford-upon-Avon with the 10.48 from Leamington Spa on 7 February 1981. Geoff Dowling.
This is Fenton from what I suspect was a spoil heap, now clad with weeds. At the foot of the hill a Class 120 unit, with a 101 centre car, is working between Crewe and Derby on 8 June 1985. Geoff Dowling.
Waiting in the glum surroundings at the remains of Severn Beach station on 29 March 1986 is Bristol based Pressed Steel class 121 55026. The awful remains of the station are not helped by the addition of "Severn Beach Live Her" in red paint on the waiting shelter/urinal unit. Severn Beach never really developed as the holiday resort the GWR hoped it would, too many better and more scenic places are close by although Severn Beach does have a quiet charm of its own. Geoff Dowling.
A pair of 2 car Park Royal units are arriving at Cannock Station on 13 May 1963. The station was on the Walsall to Rugeley line. Today the line is a useful diversionary route and has a regular passenger service to Rugeley again once again (it lost the previous services in 1965) sadly little freight now uses the line since the closure of Rugeley Power station. The scene here has been completely eradicated. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
High Level action. Rumbling across High Level bridge, Newcastle, are Metro-Cammell and Derby twin car units departing with the 14.15 service to Sunderland on 27 August 1977. Geoff Dowling.
Parcels at Penkridge. Several boxes have been ejected from the guards compartment of the Stoke-on-Trent bound Park Royal DMU. The lady porter is Mrs Harris (nee Cooper) she is heading purposefully towards them, obviously intending to carry them to join the pile she has assembled on the facing platform. Architecturally 'functional' is the best that can be said for Penkridge station but the appearance is clean and tidy, no doubt the work of the lady in the picture, the Stationmaster was Mr Humphreys. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith on 4 November 1966. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
New Mills, old Mills. Fortunately, given the small gap, this was only a 2 car set. The DMU, with 50606 leading, was leaving New Mills station on a misty afternoon on 3 September 1981. Geoff Dowling.
This is a panorama of Monument Lane, just north of Birmingham New Street. The station closed in 1958 but is still basically intact although in dreadful condition. About to pass through is a Birmingham bound class 104. The 6 road carriage sheds were used to stable DMU sets at this time. Behind the wall is the Birmingham to Wolverhampton canal, although most commercial traffic had finished it was still possible to see horse drawn boats loaded with rubbish that worked to the Tyseley incinerator. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
A class 116 passes through Bordesley station with the 12.30 Leamington Spa to Birmingham Moor Street, 15 January 1985. Geoff Dowling.
A mixed BRC&W / Met-Camm formation forms the 3.15pm Leeds - York service seen at Garforth on 11 June 1963. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A diesel Pullman set in Bristol Bath Road depot on a foggy 20 December 1969. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A Class 114 DMU formed of E50039 + E56035 in Matlock station with a Derby service on 1 April 1975. Stuart Mackay Collection.
The Fakenham & Dereham Railway Society Central Norfolk Freight Lines railtour in Dereham station on 11 October 1980. The Six Bells Junction website lists the vehicles as 56413 + 50383 / 56186 + 50376. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 119 set L587, presumably W51106 closest, on a Reading - Tonbridge service in Redhill station on 20 February 1982. Stuart Mackay Collection.
