Seen from the signal box at Reedham Swing Bridge, a BTH Type 1 approaches hauling a Met-Camm trailer paired with a Cravens DMBS. Undated, the DMU is in blue livery and the locos withdrawn by the end of 1971, so likely the 1968-1971 period. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 111 DMBS E50288 in York station on Friday 23 September 1977. This gives a good view of the narrow window at the rear of the van, and the new style of exhaust between it and the gangway. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 128 parcel car W55992 in Reading station. Undated, its headcode boxes were still fitted in late 1979, the Class 117 behind is in the white/blue stripe livery suggesting this is in the 1980-1981 period. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Stripped of underframe components, withdrawn Class 106 DMCL M50791 is seen in Whitemoor Yard, March, on 12 May 1982 en-route to disposal at Snailwell. It had been withdrawn from Newton Heath depot in December 1981. Note that sticks have been placed in the inside of the windows to prevent the sliding lights from opening. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Stretching its legs on the main line as it runs past the carriage washing roads at Kensal Green is RG depot's Class 117 unit L422, formed of W51360 + W59512 + W51402. It will shortly pass the sheds of Old Oak Common whilst running ECS from Paddington to Southall depot (?) after working an up morning local service. Nigel Mack.
With DMUs being virtually extinct from Kings Cross since the mid 1970s a short comeback occurred around 1986 with the conversion of class 114 and 105 vehicles to carry parcels only. This is a class 114 Parcels set formed of E53040+E54041 leaving Gasworks Tunnel as they trundle into Platform 1 at Kings Cross with 4R33 parcels service from Hitchin on 9 October 1986. Nigel Mack.
RG allocated Class 117 DMU set L403 formed of vehicles 51336+59488+51378 brake for the station stop at Taplow with the 1110 stopping service from Reading to Paddington on 8th April 1989. It is sobering to think that this set, and many other RG sets, had been doing the same routes day in day out and in the same formation, since they were delivered new in 1959/60 - virtually 30 yrs when this picture was taken. Most were destined to last another 3 or 4 years before they were replaced by 'Turbo's'... ! Nigel Mack.
Taken from the signal box this was the scene looking back towards the station at High Wycombe before rationalisation in the late 1980s, A scene which basically hadn't changed, apart from the modern buildings and the traction, for donkeys years. Not only is the area awash with semaphore signals, some, i believe, dating back to pre WWI but the station boasts virtually full length canopies, high walls built using engineering brick and up and down through roads. Here the 1207 Aylesbury - Marylebone, via Princes Risborough service, departs from the up platform road and crosses back to the up main as it passes 'Sword House' the "Wilkinson Sword" HQ on its way towards the capital on 23rd April 1987. Allocated to Marylebone depot this 4-Car Class 115 DMU set, formed of M51655 + M59668 + M59651 + M51865, has plied this route for virtually thirty years and is generally the only Class of DMU that ever has, making the Chiltern Lines a virtually self contained route. Nigel Mack.
Summer Saturdays on the North Wales Coast route obviously brought many additional services to the area, but on weekdays, as well, there were a few unusual workings to be found during the summer months. Here a West Midlands PTE 6-car DMU formation working the 0941 Birmingham New St - Llandudno service brakes for the station stop at Prestatyn made up of Tyseley depot sets TS 624 + TS 614 formed of M51130 + M59615 + M51143 and M53895 + M59609 + M53842 (Class 116 driving vehicles with Class 127 trailers displaced from the BedPan electrification scheme). Nigel Mack.
