Newly outshopped in refurbished white with blue stripe livery from Swindon Works, Pressed Steel built Class 121 single unit W55034 (L134) and Driving Trailer Second W56283 were awaiting a return to service in the sidings on the North side of Swindon station on May 19th 1979. The 121 would eventually be part of the Chiltern Railways fleet and was withdrawn from service in May 2017. Previously between 1992 & 1996 the unit had been in departmental use and renumbered to 977828. The unit has since returned to main line use with LSL at Crewe. Martyn Hilbert.
Having just collected the single line token for the run to Rufford, a two-car Class 108 DMU formed of M53925 & M51565 was getting underway from Midge Hall with a Preston to Ormskirk service on July 4th 1985. The track on the right is the former Up line that was taken out of use between Farington Curve Junction and Midge Hall in 1983. When the Ormskirk line was rationalised in 1970 double track was retained as far as Midge Hall. Martyn Hilbert.
With a 'Not to be Moved' sign attached to one of the front lamp irons, a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53466 & M53511 was stabled in Croft Street Sidings adjacent to the Preston PSB on December 29th 1985. To the right is Class 127 parcel set 916. Martyn Hilbert.
A Class 108/101 two-car hybrid DMU formed of cars 53637 & 53248 (873) was stood at Starcross with an Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on May 27th 1989. Note the vehicle number on the cab front. Martyn Hilbert.
A two-car Class 101/108 hybrid DMU formed of cars 54056 & 53949 was arriving at Rufford with an Ormskirk to Preston service on the evening of April 1st 1989. The Tarleton Branch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal was then a quiet little-used backwater. This location now has marinas either side of the canal, a footbridge, car parks and the railway is now obscured by trees. Martyn Hilbert.
Having collected the single line token from the signal box at nearby Midge Hall, a Class 101 two-car DMU formed of cars M51523 & M53219 (N657) was gaining momentum as it was passing Pages Crossing at Ulnes Walton whilst en-route to its next station call at Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on April 29th 1989. With a BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53431 & M53512 (N662) stabled in the sidings, Class 150/2 150 211 was departing from Southport with a service for Manchester Victoria on October 1st 1988. 150 211 was one of the batch of 'odd' numbered 150/2's that went new to Newton Heath in 1986/87. With the Rowntree-Macintosh chocolate factory alongside, a Metro-Cammell Class 101 three-car DMU formed of cars E50283, E59571 & E50278 was stood at Halifax with the daily Leeds to Blackpool North service on August 9th 1980. During this period, this out-and-back Monday-Saturday working was the only regular timetabled passenger train to use the Copy Pit route between Hall Royd Junction at Todmorden and Gannow Junction at Burnley. A Gloucester Class 119 two-car DMU formed of W51052 & W51080 was stood in the separate branch platform at Liskeard with a service from Looe on July 26th 1980. The 119's were 'Cross-Country' type DMU's that normally ran in three-car formations. As Plymouth Laira set P571, the two cars were formed together between May 1980 and May 1981, when they were transferred to Cardiff. Martyn Hilbert.
At the head of a line-up of First Generation DMU sets stabled between duties in platform 5 at Southport on April 16th 1989, was two-car Class 101/108 hybrid formed of cars E54085 & E51420 (N616). Martyn Hilbert.
Heading Eastbound, a three-car Class 110 'Calder Valley' DMU was passing through Bamber Bridge station with a Blackpool North to Leeds service on July 25th 1977. At the time, this out-and-back service from Leeds to the Fylde Coast was the only regular daily timetabled passenger service that travelled over the Copy Pit route from Gannow Junction to Hall Royd Junction. Monday to Friday this service was always a three-car Bradford Hammerton Street allocated Class 110, but on Summer Saturdays and Bank Holidays the service was often strengthened to 6, 9 or 12 cars.
