Metro-Cammell unit 50321 is not too environmentally friendly as it waits to depart from Birmingham New Street. The train is the 13.05 Longbridge - Four Oaks, across from the train 45 120 waits to head for Bristol. In the foreground a porter uses a BRUTE trolley for it's intended purpose, sitting in the sun reading the sports page of the Daily Mirror. 29/05/1982. Geoff Dowling.

Nuneaton Abbey station looks a little bleak on a cloudy 14th September 1959. The station was located on Midland Road and served the housing estates rather than the town centre. Behind the station is the large Judkins Quarry complex this supplied the area with a constant film of dust which covered everything in the immediate vicinity. The opposite platform has a water crane still in use the station closed to passengers 4th March 1968. Approaching the station is an LMR 3 car Cravens unit on a Nottingham - Birmingham working. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

An unkempt class 115 dmu pollutes Marylebone station as it waits to leave with the 13.10 service to Aylesbury 30/11/1982. The station was slated for closure at one point, fortunately that did not happen and today we have the splendid refurbished terminus of the Chiltern line. The centre platforms are a parking ground for B.R engineers vans which trundled from the road, through what is now the busy station concourse, to park where the cycle storage is today. Geoff Dowling.

Birkenhead (Woodside) was near Woodside Pier on the Mersey. The station was a mini Paddington with lovely curved overall roof, it was closed on 5th November 1967, this photograph was taken 30th August 1967. This picture, which has been published but in brutally cropped form, features a Park Royal 103/145 dmu discharging a healthy number of passengers, and a Met-Camm on the left. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

A green liveried DMU calls at the splendid ornate station at Kenilworth, on the Coventry to Leamington line, on 18 January 1965. This was a rebuild of an earlier station and dated from 1884. The station lasted until 18th January 1965 when it closed although the structure remained intact for many years as a builders merchants. Various plans have appeared over the years for a new Kenilworth Station, eventually succeeding. This shot shows a country station with porter, coal trucks in the siding and as many station signs as could be crammed in. The DMU formation includes a Metro-Cammell twin and what could be Park Royal and Gloucester twins. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

Keswick station, circa 1970, was a shadow of it's former self, like so many stations shortly to close it is dilapidated and uncared for. To the far right is the water tower from steam days, a sign on the left platform says Subway although there is no reason to cross. In the platform is the lone surviving working, an out and back from Penrith, Keswick was an intermediate station beween Cockermouth and Penrith, which was recommended for closure in the Beeching report. The line closed west of Keswick 18th April 1966 leaving an 18 mile branch to Penrith, and that was closed 4th March 1972. The left hand building of Kewick station is now looked after and is the start of a popular footpath along the old track bed. Geoff Dowling.

A two-car Gloucester RCW unit (later class 100) is bowling past Bournville signal box, no doubt preparing to stop at Bournville station, circa early 1960s. The scene is dominated by the water tower of Bournville loco depot. To the left of the unit is Bournville signal box, as well as the main lines it controlled the entrance to Lifford Goods canal branch which followed the line of the canal. On this (undated) picture a brake van is parked on the approach to Lifford goods. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
