Making a spirited climb of the Lickey Bank is one of Tyseley's 3 car class 116 units although the centre car is a newly painted class 101 Metro-Cammell coach - set TS557, presumably 50100 + 59131 + 50840. The passengers are enjoying a fine view from the front windows as they head towards Blackwell at the summit of the climb. The unit, which started from Worcester, has Four Oaks on the blind although I do not remember services from Worcester going beyond Birmingham New Street. 25/08/1979. Geoff Dowling.
The driver of a Metro-Cammell 2 car set is leaning out of his cab to take the token from the signalman who holds it ready. The exchange is being made at Machynlleth station with a Shrewsbury - Aberystwyth train. To the far left of the scene the goods yard has a number of 4 wheeled vans in the sidings. I would guess the date at around 1971. Peter cut this 6x6 cm neg down because of damage in the sky thus losing the top of the telegraph pole, if only he could have foretold the arrival of photoshop! Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
The new Coventry station is well on the way to being re-built in this photograph from 1963, the new station is a gleaming temple of concrete to greet the new age of electrification. The platform buildings seem complete but much is still needingto be done for the main buildings,Station Square has not been started. The new station platform lights have red tops, a feature that was short-lived. In the foreground a Metro-Cammell DMU is leaving for Nuneaton, the one in the background could be for Leamington or Rugby, both are in original livery with speed whiskers. The slide was a bin rescue job from the University of Birmingham. Geoff Dowling Collection.
Nearest the camera is Birmingham RC&W DMBS 50451. The unit is in one of the bay platforms at Manchester Victoria station. This station, even in diesel days, seemed to live up to the 'Victoria' part of it's name, the old world atmosphere is helped here by the porter and handcart ambling past the DMU. The train, photographed 26/04/1982, was operating on the Oldham circular service. Geoff Dowling.
Dwarfed by the tall Chimneys of the London Brick brickworks a Cravens dmu approaches Lidlington. The class 105 unit is 56120 & 50393 and they are working the 11.00 Bedford - Bletchley service on 10/10/1979. Geoff Dowling.
Looking towards the north end of Preston station there was not a lot to excite the traction enthusiast at 16.55 on 29th March 1980, just a lone 2 car class 108 DMU waiting for some custom. The station was built in 1880 jointly for the LNWR and the L&Y railways by engineer William Baker, because of demolitions and additions over the years it is not a listed building*. *Source: The Railway Heritage of Britain, Biddle & Nock 1983. Geoff Dowling.
One of Tyseley's Class 116 dmu's (seems to be set TY515, presumably 51143 + 59015 + 50050) is between Olton station and Acocks Green with a Leamington - Birmingham Moor Street. Although the shot looks to be illegal it was taken from my Mother-in-Law's back garden in The Avenue, Acocks Green. As Didcot received more coal the cracks in the house grew wider and things vibrated as the merry-go-round trains pounded past. March 1974. Geoff Dowling.
Arriving at Shirley station on a fine evening is one of Tyseley's class 116 DMUs (set TS500, presumably 50092 + 59000 + 50061). It is working the 16.50 Stratford - Birmingham Moor Street. The train has recently been given the new livery of white with a blue stripe, this colour scheme looked very attractive when fresh but it did not stand up to day-to-day use and was soon phased out in favour of the 'coach' livery of blue and pale grey. Shirley today remains a pleasant station, the running in board has gone and so have the semaphore signals. 18/06/1979 Geoff Dowling.
Then as now Birmingham Moor street station was a fine building. In this 7th December 1979 picture a Tyseley class 116 DMU (set TS524, presumably 50103 + 59024 + 50066) is waiting for 21.00 when it will leave for Leamington Spa. The platform it was taken from still has a terminal road but behind the fence to the right is the new part of the station and that is the through line to Snow Hill station, at the time of photography this was the old carriage sidings. Behind the station the back of the High street Co-op store is dominant, the Rotunda is still there of course but the area of car parking (far left) is now a dual carriageway and Selfridges thoughtful addition to the Birmingham landscape. Geoff Dowling.
Pressed Steel class 117, with W51382 nearest the camera, leaves Droitwich for Birmingham with the 10.28 from Hereford. The train will curve to the right at the signal box and take the line to Stoke works before ascending the Lickey incline and travelling to Birmingham New Street. The date is 28/04/1984 and the coal yard is fully operational with empty wagons waiting to be collected. Geoff Dowling.
A Cravens twin in Cairnbulg station with a Fraserburgh - St Combs service on 9 December 1963. The DTCL was recorded as SC56468, so the DMBS closest is presumably SC51479. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A Class 108 twin set, location unknown, circa early/mid-1970s. E50608 leads, with York on the destination blind, and it would have been a Neville Hill vehicle at this time. Note the oval buffers, unusual for this type. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 101 DMUs set 108 passes set 102 in the siding to the north east of Saxmundham. Circa 1987-1989 period. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 118 DMU set C465 in Barry station. The power cars will be 51307 and 51322, it has a Met-Camm centre car which probably dates the image to circa mid-1986. Stuart Mackay Collection.
An RCTS railtour in Sunderland shed yard on 5 March 1967, NE51841 closest. The unnamed tour visited various NER depots. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Do these windows need washed? may be what the porter is thinking. The slide mentions that there may have been a fire on parcel DMU SC55013, which could be the reason for the staff attention at Cupar on 12 July 1972. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A Class 117 DMU on an up Reading - Paddington working in Sonning Cutting on 14 May 1977. HST 253013 is on the 13:15 Paddington - Swansea service. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A Class 127 DMU arrives into St Albans on 4 September 1982. The vehicles were recorded as 51625 + 59602 + 59637 + 51645. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 117 set L429 (51367 and presumably 59519 + 51409) in Maidenhead station. Thought to be taken in 1987. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Norwich allocated Class 101 DMU set 76, 54352 and presumably 51252, at Whitlington Junction with a Lowestoft service on 22 June 1991. Stuart Mackay Collection.
