met-camm-lightweight DMU

An official Met-Camm image (negative DZ130, un-matted version) showing a bogie for a 'Lightweight' 79xxx power car. The final drive can be seen fitted to the closest axle, the end frame of the bogie lowered for the cardan shaft to be fitted. The short footsteps on the front tell us this will be fitted to the cab end of a vehicle, the other bogie would have longer footsteps for the van. Metropolitan Cammell.

Gospel Oak station on 4 November 1988, with BRCW Class 104 unit L704 awaiting departure with the 15.38 to Barking. I recorded the set as consisting of 53477/53479, the later DMBS still in plain blue standing in for regular partner 53540 in the set. Lewis Bevan.

A pair of Class 108 2-car dmus approach Grange-over-Sands on a sunny day in late October 1979. I have no details of the actual date, or the numbers of the vehicles in shot. We were on a short break in Blackpool for half-term and had had a day in the lakes, stopping off at Grange for a swift pint and a walk along the promenade here. Lewis Bevan.

101 DMU

A visit (my only one, so far) to Ilkley on 5 May 1979. I travelled on the 10.27 from Leeds, formed of Metro-Cam Class 101 2-car unit 56385/50202, and this unit is seen departing from Ilkley on its next working back to Leeds, past Ilkley signal box. Ilkley Junction box, which dated from 1913, was closed as from 11 July 1994 in the run-up to the electrification of the line. According to Wikipedia "Ilkley is notable in that it was the last British Rail station to be lit by gas. The gas lights were extinguished for the last time on 8 May 1988." Lewis Bevan.

A two-car Class 108 to the left (probably on a Wigan Wallgate service), and a three-car Class 110/101 hybrid coupled to a Class 108 on the right (probably on a Manchester Victoria service), in Southport station on 21 May 1988. Lewis Bevan.

Class 122 single unit M55004 awaits departure from Kettering as the 19.14 hrs to Corby on 13 May 1988. On the left of the picture a 2-car Class 108 comprising M51914/M54279 is approaching to form the 18.45 hrs Kettering-Bedford. Lewis Bevan.

M51562, the 1000th diesel railcar built by Derby Works, seen in Chester Northgate on 4 January 1960. It was an a New Brighton train, this was the first day of DMUs on the services, and unusually it sits in platform 1 at Northgate normally only used by services over the CLC to Manchester Central.
