105 DMU

Class 105 2-car DMU set 33 (54447 + 53377) stands at Great Yarmouth soon after arrival with train 2B24 the 12.02 stopper from Norwich on 30/06/84. Alongside stands 37 140 shut down in the sidings. Adrian Nicholls.

CRS 'China Clay Rambler' railtour at Bugle. 28/04/90. Standing a long way from London Paddington, 288 miles in fact according to the milepost. The Cornish Railway Society 'China Clay Rambler' railtour is seen at Bugle station for a photo stop after returning from St.Dennis Junction ballast tip towards Par. The train is on the Newquay passenger branch track but had traversed the last remnant of the Carbis Wharf branch at Bugle which was still usable from Goonbarrow to Molinnis Level Crossing just south of Bugle station on a parallel alignment to the passenger track. The last freight west of Bugle to Carbis Wharf having run on 25th August 1989 a year earlier. Adrian Nicholls.

CRS 'China Clay Rambler' tour at Fowey Docks. Cornwall. 28/04/90. The 2+3-car class 108 DMU formation used on the Cornish Railway Society "China Clay Rambler" railtour is seen in the china clay covered Carne Point Yard at Fowey Docks. Most tours that traversed the Fowey branch never got beyond the BR/ECC Ltd boundary but the CRS seemed to be able to reach parts of the network nobody else could. This tour was a freight only track bashers dream as it also visited Nanpean Wharf at Drinnick Mill, another rare location for a railtour to penetrate along with other such delights as the Par Harbour, St.Dennis ballast tip, Parkandillack, Pontsmill and part of the closed Carbis Wharf branch. Closest is set 955, 52054 and presumably 51933. Adrian Nicholls.

CRS 'China Clay Rambler' at Pontsmill, 28/04/90, formed of a two and three-car Class 108, set 955 at this end (52054 and presumably 51933). A classic Cornish DMU railtour is seen at the northern extremity of the the Pontsmill branch. This short freight only branch and once part of the 1841 built Treffry Tramway left the Newquay branch just north of St.Blazey and served the English China Clay Co. Pontsmill kiln driers. The area was once a hive of activity for the local mineral traffic with several incline planes in the area but this dwindled down to just the china clay from the 1960's which in turn ceased two years after this photo was taken. The last train of dried clay leaving on 21/04/92. The line faced an uncertain future but did live on into the late 1990's as the preferred spot to stable the Royal Train overnight when Prince Charles visited his Duchy of Cornwall. Adrian Nicholls.

A 2-car class 108 DMU set is seen on the truncated Macclesfield, Bollington & Marple railway at Rose Hill Marple station. The line beyond the DMU used to run through to Macclesfield but closed on 05/01/1970 leaving just a mile long branch line at the northern end of the route from Marple Wharf Junction on the Manchester to Sheffield mainline. With Marple being within the Greater Manchester PTE boundary I suspect that is the reason this stretch survived when the remainder closed. The DMU set seen here had just arrived with service 2H50 the 12.50 from Manchester Piccadilly and after the driver changed would return as 2H53 the 13.46 back to Manchester Piccadilly. Adrian Nicholls.

08 761 is shut down for the weekend at Grimsby Town station centre road while a 2-car class 114 DMU set waits with train 2D94 the 13.06 Barton-on-Humber to Cleethorpes. 21/04/84. Adrian Nicholls.

The Greenford branch shuttle 'Bubble car' is seen in platform 3 at Ealing Broadway station waiting to work the 15.25 to Greenford. The branch proper leaves the West of England mainline at West Ealing Junction but West Ealing station was never a suitable location to reverse the train at. Instead it ran through to the busier Ealing Broadway station where London Underground connections were also available and there was a turn back siding at the east end of the station between the relief and fast lines. Adrian Nicholls.

Diesel Motor Luggage Van no.W55992 leaves a trail of exhaust as it heads towards the capital on the up relief at Acton Mainline station. The unit is working parcels train 4A50 the 15.30 West Drayton to London Paddington. Adrian Nicholls.

Class 121 set C133 (W55033) is seen stood off the north end of Bargoed station in the headshunt siding. When this shot was taken the upside platform for northbound train at Bargoed had been abandoned and all trains used the down line platform only. North of Bargoed had been singled through to Rhymney as an economy measure leaving just a short stub of the down line as a headshunt where the DMU is stood. The off peak service on the Rhymney Valley line saw trains run hourly from Barry Island to Bargoed only. The final leg of the journey from Bargoed to Rhymney was thus covered by a single car DMU on alternate hours which was deemed adequate for the daytime demand. As both trains couldn't share the same short platform the Rhymney service would have to stand off until the platform was vacated by the train back down the valley. My photo depicts set C133 waiting to drop into the platform to form 2C65 the 14.20 all stations Bargoed to Rhymney as soon as the 14.15 to Cardiff has departe Adrian Nicholls.

DB9750008 (ex-79612) as part of the Ultrasonic Test train, Tyseley depot, probably not long after conversion. Graham Clark.

104 DMU

A three-car hybrid set at Derby Midland circa 1969. Closest is BRC&W DMC M50501, possibly the only vehicle of the type to have a full yellow end while still in green livery, also unusual in having a first class stripe. The other two vehicles are in blue, a BRC&W centre car and a Cravens DMBS. Nottingham is on the destination blind. Graham Clark.

105 DMU

Cravens DMUs in the early Rail Blue era. The driver trailer (possibly E56431) has no sign that first class is on offer, no yellow stripe or transfers on the windows. It has yellow cab doors, the vehicle facing has another short-lived variation from this era, a small yellow panel. Date / location unknown. Graham Clark.

105 DMU

A northbound Cravens power/trailer set at Hatfield on the East Coast Main Line, date unknown. Graham Clark.

104 DMU

BRC&W DMUs at Buxton depot, date unknown but the small yellow panels suggest circa 1967/8. Graham Clark.

104 DMU

A BRC&W set arriving into Hull Paragon, date unknown. The DMS is either E50561 or E50581. Graham Clark.

110 DMU

A three-car BRC&W (later Class 110) DMU with Sheffield on the destination blind at Grindleford station on the Hope Valley line, date unknown. Graham Clark.

blue-pullman DMU

A Met-Camm Pullman set, possibly at Old Oak Common. The dent on the front means this is probably 60096. Graham Clark.
