A long way from Wales. Leaving Tyseley DMU depot on 31/08/1985 is a Cardiff Valley Class 116 set with power cars 53083 + 53820, the leading vehicle has the distinctive red 'V' and the Welsh Dragon emblem on the end. The centre car is presumably 59482. The view was taken from the ski lift in the Ackers Trust site, now it is covered in trees, this view is impossible. Geoff Dowling.
This is the Redditch/Ashchurch side of Barnt Green station on 25 May 1963, a Metro-Cammell unit has just arrived from Redditch and Ivatt 4MT 43122 is heading in the opposite direction. The fine footbridge survived, albeit altered, until October 2015 but the electrification to Bromsgrove has finally seen it off. The little waiting room on the far left has gone, did it really need a chimney that big? The main station building has also gone, today we are left with the usual skimpy bus shelters. With a view dominated by The Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, 54090 - working the 14.00 Newark to Cleethorpes service - passes a Class 114 at East Holmes as they cross the River Witham on 20/07/1985. Geoff Dowling.
Pottering along the main line at Smethwick is a Tyseley based class 116 DMU. The train is the 13.00 Stourbridge Junction to Birmingham New Street, these trains stopped at Smethwick West and continued to Birmingham along the congested Wolverhampton line. Today Smethwick West is a weed infested closed platform and the trains take the old GWR route through a new station at Galton Bridge. The next station along from Galton bridge is The Hawthorns and the floodlight towers of the WBA ground are visible to the left of the gasworks in this picture, a selection of EMU sets can be seen in the stabling point, the scene has disappeared behind a small forest now. Class 116 DMU set C305 (Presumably 50131 + 59039 + 50089) passes under the Highfield Road bridge, just south of Heath stations at Heath Junction in Cardiff. With Rhymney on the destination blind, this is likely a Rhymney - Cardiff service. Undated, the unpainted cab window surround dates it to around autumn 1979, and, given the two photographers, possibly on the 12th August 1979 as the RPPR Welsh Warrior railtour would pass this way. Derby built DMU M56236 was one of a number of two-car units based at Carlisle Kingmoor and used on the old G&SWR route into Scotland. It is pictured at Dumfries on October 2nd 1977. emdjt42.
A Cravens two-car, with Class 141 (though we never called them that!) E56414 leading, is pictured on the up slow platform at Oakleigh Park with the retimed 12-28 to Kings Cross on September 12th 1976. As can be seen the overhead wires are up and the Class 313s were about to take over from the Cravens. Introduced in 1958, the Cravens sets were used on the Kings Cross inner surburban services for around 18 years - the Class 313s have been around now for 33 years! Oakleigh Park station is much improved - though the flowers are nice in this shot! emdjt42.
TSLRB Sc59574 is pictured on Dundee MPD on April 13th 1980. The seats are covered in Trojan moquette. The vehicle had recently been transferred from Inverness, the text on the lower bodyside corners reads "Gangway Adapter Fitted Uncouple With Care", these has been required for working in the Class 120s there which had Pullman gangways. emdjt42.
