101656 (51230 + 54056) waits for its time of departure at Northwich Station on the 11th May 1999 at 08.40 with a Chester to Manchester Piccadilly working. Northwich Station looks in poor shape with boarded up windows and doors, and weeds on many parts of the platforms. Dave Gommersall.

By 1989 Sprinters were replacing DMUs on most services but on the 3rd May 1989 T302 (51402 and presumably 59512 + 51360) was on the 14.02 Birmingham New Street to Cardiff Central via WSH and is seen leaving Abbotswood Junction at 15.10, somewhat late! Possibly due to a failed 156xxx? Dave Gommersall.
On the 4th July 1991 2 Western Region DMUs L836 (51434 59540 51503) and L207 (51221 54396) stop at Radley Station with an afternoon Oxford to Reading stopper. Both units look as though they have only recently been painted in Network SE livery and appear in almost pristine condition!! They were built as class 101 Metro Cammell units between 1956 and 1959 and served BR very well, though of course steam buffs would say they made steam workings disappear much more quickly!! My maternal grandparents lived in Barton on Humber and we spent many weeks in the summer holidays staying in the town where we could wander freely in complete safety, but it was the 1950s!!! A day trip to Cleethorpes by train was eagerly anticipated and until the late 50s was steam hauled from New Holland Pier, we having arrived from Barton on the shuttle! Hence on a trip down memory lane with my mother in 1988 New Holland was visited and this was all that was left! On the right were the lines to the pier where the paddle steamer to Hull was boarded but Barrow Road Crossing signal box survived. 51524 and 51454 arrive at New Holland Town with the 11.00 Barton on Humber to Cleethorpes on the 9th August 1988. Whilst DMUs could never replace steam, for us boy trainspotters they had one advantage in that you could sit behind the driver and see all trains on the route! Dave Gommersall.
