An official Met-Camm image (negative DZ134) showing a new 'Lightweight' 79xxx series DMU. Despite 'Bury' being displayed on the destination blind, this is an Eastern Region set, E79263 + E79047 which would be allocated new to Norwich on 5 January 1956. Courtesy of the Kevin Dowd Collection. Metropolitan Cammell.
A Met-Camm publicity image that was used in several of their trade adverts such as celebrating 300, 500 and 600 diesel railcars supplied. It shows an Eastern Region Met-Camm Lightweight set with Lowestoft on the destination blind, location unknown, circa early 1956. It seems to be a posed shot (and so not necessarily in East Anglia) - there are no passengers on board and unless the track in the foreground is out of use it is on the wrong line for the driver to be at this end. The colour of the seats can be clearly seen in the DTS(L), maroon moquette and tan vinyl. Metropolitan Cammell.
An official Met-Camm image showing the production line of 79xxx 'Lighweight' vehicles at their Saltley Works. The lined vehicle to the right is E79055, allocated new to 32A Norwich on 28/02/56, so this was probably taken in early February 1956. Taken from a Met-Camm promotional publication. Metropolitan Cammell.
An Eastern Region publicity image showing the front end of Met-Camm 'Lightweight' driving trailer third E79273 at Stratford. It was allocated new there in March 1956. Note the jumper socket lids are numbered, from left to right 4 3 and 3 4. Image courtesy of the Chris Booth Collection. British Railways.
An Eastern Region publicity image showing a new Met-Camm 'Lightweight' DMU comprising driving motor third brake E79058 and driving trailer third E79274. Taken at Stratford, they were allocated new there in March 1956. Image courtesy of the Chris Booth Collection. British Railways.
An Eastern Region publicity image showing the corridor connection on a Met-Camm 'Lightweight' DMU between E79274 and E79058 at Stratford circa March 1956. On the jumper closest the number 4 can be seen painted on the right hand plug. The text on the left vehicle end reads - 25 TONS, 57-0" x 9-3", 72 T., T.O., TWIN' - showing it is a third open in a twin set with 72 third class seats. There is some small text at the very bottom corner, it is unreadable but seems to end in 'SYN' so is probably a paint date. Note the style of water filler pipe with flap, I normally associated this with drinking water for buffet / restaurant cars, and that the DMBS also had the filler pipe, not because it has a toilet but these are for the coolant system. Image courtesy of the Chris Booth Collection. British Railways.
An Eastern Region publicity image showing the middle section of a Met-Camm 'Lightweight' DMU power car, taken at Stratford in March 1956. This was probably to show the underframe equipment, and this is the number one (drivers) side, with the exhaust heading to the rear of the vehicle on the right. The most obvious differences from the 5xxxx series Met-Camms is the different style of radiator and different style of engine air intake oil bath filter (the cylinder on the left of the engine). The vehicle number is unknown, but is likely E79057. Image courtesy of the Chris Booth Collection. British Railways.
An Eastern Region publicity image showing the middle section of a Met-Camm 'Lightweight' DMU power car, taken at Stratford in March 1956. This was probably to show the underframe equipment, and this is the number two (non-drivers) side, with the exhaust heading from the engine to the rear of the vehicle on the left. The vehicle number is unknown but is believed to be E79057. Image courtesy of the Chris Booth Collection. British Railways.
An Eastern Region publicity image showing the guards van of a Met-Camm 'Lightweight' DMU power car, taken at Stratford in March 1956. Of note is the wooden floor and the two level switch tanks for the coolant system, connected to the header / expansion tanks in the vestibule roof areas. This was probably taken in either E79057 or E79058. Image courtesy of the Chris Booth Collection. British Railways.

An official Met-Camm image (negative DZ142) showing two of their "Lightweight" DMU sets at Castle Bromwich. Closest is E79278 - presumably paired with E79062 - and is displaying "Birmingham (New St)" on the destination blind. Before delivery to Lincoln the set was used on the New Street - Castle Bromwich British Industries Fair shuttles. Metropolitan Cammell.
Sunbeams and a Met-Camm (pjs 1259). In many ways this is an interesting picture. It shows a scene in the 1950's of a Metro-Cammell unit, obviously very new, standing under the arched roof of the Midland side at Birmingham New Street station while working a British Industries Fair shuttle. The other point about the picture is that it is a transparency not a negative, Peter used a roll of monochrome reversal film. I have spent a long time looking for the negative before realising what it was, it was used in Peter's talk on the Photo Club circuit about 'A Life in Transport' Image by Peter Shoesmith late April or early May 1956. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

79055 + 79271 at Comrie after arriving with the 6.03pm Gleneagles - Comrie service on June 21, 1956. It was one of two sets borrowed from the Eastern Region for trials, DMU services would not start in Scotland until January 1957. Hamish Stevenson.
An Eastern Region publicity image that was used on timetables. Taken on board a Met-Camm "Lightweight", about to pass another of the same type. Circa mid-1956. British Railways.
An Eastern Region publicity image that was used on timetables. Taken on board a Met-Camm "Lightweight" circa mid-1956, the two vehicle types had the 2+3 seating on opposite sides of the middle saloon. Looking forwards with the 2 seaters on the right this will be a DMBS. British Railways.
An Eastern Region publicity image showing the 'new diesel maintenance depot at Norwich'. Met-Camm 'lightweight' sets can be seen inside, the closest vehicle on the centre road is E79266. Undated, but the image appeared in the Railway Gazette magazine dated 17th August 1956 and so was probably taken circa July 1956. Image courtesy of the Chris Booth Collection. British Railways.
