493.  SCHEMES ALREADY IN OPERATION

1.  Financial results

Financial results of the West Cumberland scheme which has been in operation over 12 months have been reported to the Area Board. Statement of cumulative increase in receipts up to 31st October 1956 of diesel services operating on the L.M.R. have also been reported to the Area Board, who have requested the General Manager to put in hand an overall assessment of the results in each case on an annual basis and submit to the Board.

2.  West Cumberland Scheme

(a)  Traffic receipts to 30.11.56. shown on Appendix 'A' attached.

(b)  Proposed pruning during winter.  Mr.Dow reported that seperate reports have been made by L.M. District Officer and General Manager of Bus Company, but agreement has not yet been reached.

(c)  Operation of scheme.  Noted that, to cope with additional traffic in the Birrmingham area, it has been found necessary to transfer two 2-car units from the Carlisle-Silloth branch and in the meantime the services on this branch are being steam operated.  (See Minute 486.4)

2.  Watford - St.Albans Scheme

(a)  Traffic receipts to 30.11.56 shown on Appendix 'A' attached.

(b)  Condition of permanent way.  Mr.Butland reported that the first mile of track will be welded as a trial before the end of February.  Meanwhile it has been possible somewhat to overcome the shortage of men on this line.
