Two power cars, formerly in set T318, went over to Sandite duties after withdrawal from passenger use in October 1991. The vehicle numbers were black on top of a white rectangular background (pretty certain to just be a vinyl sticker on top of the original numbers. It also carried set number T007.
The image shows the vehicles stabled at Tyseley, where they were based, on 29.12.1991. Andy Cole.
This additional use allowed 51321 to survive long enough to enter preservation, 51306 was disposed of at MC Metals in Glasgow in March 1994.
Two other vehicles, 51314/29, survived at Tyseley into 1995. Carrying set number T006 which was in the sandite / route learner series, the individual vehicles were not renumbered into the departmental series and so the reason for their retention is unclear.
