In August 1969 I read that the Great Central & Midland Railway branch line from New Mills to Hayfield in Derbyshire was going to be closed shortly so took time off from geological mapping near Hartington on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border & travelled up by train from Buxton. This diesel multiple unit (M50348 + M56484) took me from New Mills and here it stands in Hayfield station after arrival. Hayfield station building was intact & quite a few passengers still used the service. So why close it? Allegedly to save maintenance of the tunnel just outside New Mills station. However, after closure the tunnel remained open because it was used to stable the dmu before returning to Manchester. So again why close it? Pete LG99.
Macclesfield station in August 1969 and the dmu to Manchester via the ex-Macclesfield Bollington & Marple Railway route is formed of a Class 100/108 hybrid (set LT291), M50348 + M56484. Pete LG99.
Class 100 DMBS M50348 up on jacks in Swindon Works in 1975. Note the LT291 set number in the window. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 100 set M50348 + M56103 arrives into Manchester Piccadilly on May 14, 1977. Rex Holt.
M50348 at Strines on 11th November 1978 with a New Mills Central - Manchester Piccadilly service. The second window on the side appears to be missing and boarded over. Robert Chilton.
Set LT291 - a Class 108/100 hybrid (M56484 + M50348) - at High Lane Station (Cheshire) in August 1969. Pete LG99.
Seen on December 23rd 1974 is a Scarborough to Manchester Victoria service, consisting of E50554, E59234, E59211 & E50575 pausing at Stalybridge, whilst on the right, the connecting service to Stockport awaits departure in the form of M50348 & M56103 in the days when the 'Stalybridge shuttle' used to run every hour or so. Suthen Softy.
A Longsight allocated Class 100 (M56103 and presumably M50348) in Southport station with a two-car Class 104 and another Class 100 behind. The slide process date was July 1975. Stuart Mackay Collection.
