A three-car Class 120/111 hybrid formed of Swindon Class 120 driving cars M53733 & M51586 with a Metro-Cammell Class 111 centre trailer M59107, was stood on the Up Fast at Leyland station with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on January 25th 1986. Martyn Hilbert.

Weird sight at Wester Hailes. The suburb of Wester Hailes grew rapidly in the 1970s but despite straddling the Edinburgh to Glasgow Central and Carstairs route, the locals were not provided with a station until May 1987. Three months after opening, we see the strange sight of a Swindon Cross Country class 120 DMU (53733 and presumably 59262 + 53654) stopping here on an Edinburgh to Glasgow Central via Shotts service. This was during the "anything goes" period where worn out DMUs displaced from Sprinterisation elsewhere were moved around the country and Scotrail got a few of these sets to tide them over during the latter half of the 1980s. As it does so, it passes set 120 532 (53699/59571/53658), coupled to 120533 (53682/59532/53700) which is not visible. These latter two sets will form the 15.13 to Cowdenbeath. Leonard Rogers.

An Edinburgh - Cardenden service passes through Princes Street Gardens on 13 May 1989. The leading car is 53164 - it kept its damaged front end for at least a year after this. The centre car will likely be Class 110 59809, and the Class 120 at the far end should be 53733. Neil Smith.
An unusual view of the west end of Waverley station, Edinburgh, on the morning of 5/7/89. No trains were moving this day - it was the day of one of the weekly strikes staged by the NUR that summer. Almost every platform is filled with stabled stock.
