An official image (London Midland Region publicity negative DM903) showing a four-car Met-Camm set in Carlisle Citadel station on 7 February 1957. These South Gosforth allocated DMUs had taken over the services from Newcastle a few days earlier on the 4th. Closest is DMCL E50148, the others should be TSL E59047, TBSL E59054 and DMCL E50149, all with 2+2 seating. British Railways.
E51557 is on the front of a four-car refurbished Class 111 set (presumably with 59054 + 59070 + 50270) seen at York, date unknown. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A Class 120 DMSL M53680 / Class 101 TBSL (presumably 59054) / Class 120 DMSL hybrid DMU seen in Aberystwyth station on 30 July 1983. Alistair Ness.
A Class 116/101/116 DMU (53890 + 59054 + 53101) at Tyseley on 7 June 1986. Keith Miller.
Emerging from the gloom of Birmingham New Street station on 23/Apr/1987 is Class 115 DMBS no. 51884 at the head of non-gangwayed three-car set TS524 formed with 59622 (cl.127) and 53112 (cl.116). This was a nine-car consist, the other sets recorded as being TS400 formed 51862-59602-53124 (classes 115-127-116) and TS354 formed 53890-59054-53910 (two class 116 DMSs with a class 101 trailer brake). Unusually at this late date and for a unit in Blue/Grey livery, two white marker dots are displayed in the former headcode panel of the leading 115 and as I recall, they were actually stuck on the outside purely for effect. It looked really good compared with the usual plain painted treatment. 51884 had a more varied allocation history than many 115s, being new to Chaddesden thence to Trafford Pk, Allerton, Toton, Allerton again, Marylebone, back to Allerton before a return to Marylebone and a final transfer to Tyseley in 1986. It received gangways for the first time only in September 87. Robert Chilton.
Showing the flexibility of this era of DMUs is Tyseley set T354 two Class 116 DMSs are working with a Class 101 TBSL (presumably 53890 + 59054 + 53910). The train was photographed at Longbridge 25 April 1987 while it was working a Worcester to Birmingham New Street via Bromsgrove service. Peter Tandy.
