A well-filled Derby Lightweight Class 108 DMU formed of cars M54272 & M51917, was stood on the Up Slow at Leyland station with a tea-time Blackpool North to Buxton service on July 3rd 1989. Martyn Hilbert.
Emerging from New Mills Tunnel is a rather battered Longsight allocated Derby class 108 dmu LO266, (54272) on a Manchester - Sheffield local service through the Hope Valley, 16th June 1990. Andrew J Crowther.
M51417 was a BR Derby works built Class 108, this unit, which is obviously brand new, went to Walsall (3C Rycroft depot) 20/02/1960, delivered with M56272. It was withdrawn from Longsight 09/06/1992 and scrapped at Gwent Demolition, Margam. The picture was taken on the LNWR side of New Street, the Midland side still had the overall roof but this on side the roof was considered too badly damaged in the war and was demolished. Just behind the unit is the connecting foot bridge which ran from the Stephenson Street, through the Queens Hotel building (right) over Queens Drive, which divided the Midland and LNWR sides, and exited onto Station Street. The bridge had been open when both sides had their roofs but clearly this side had to have roof and BR provided the minimum they could get away with, the rather nasty corrugated asbestos roof seen here. The 10:19 (SuO) to Helsby is seen at Chester on 20 August 1989 formed of Class 108 DMU set CH266 (51917 and presumably 54272). Robert Thomas.
Class 108 Derby 2-car DMU CH266 (51917+54272) Platform 1 Manchester Piccadilly; possibly 17-10-89. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.
Passengers have just alighted from Longsight's class 108 set no. LO266 formed 51917 - 54272 on a bright sunny day at Manchester Victoria, 27/Jul/1991. Robert Chilton.
