On 23rd August 1980 M50796 heads a 4-car formation from Southport to Manchester Victoria, arriving at Appley Bridge. The linoleum works in the background dated from 1898, but had ceased production and was demolished the following year. Records show that the works, and a corn mill previously occupying the site, were rail connected from 1883 until July 1967. S Gaskell.

Vehicle: 50796   

After depositing its passengers at Appley Bridge, Newton Heath based 50796 prepares to lead its service eastwards on 23rd August 1980. The 4-car formation was on a Southport to Manchester Victoria working. Dating from 1957, this unit was nearing the end of its life, being withdrawn in December 1982, and scrapped by Vic Berry of Leicester in 1984. S Gaskell.

On a warm summer evening at Appley Bridge in 1981 a 2-car Class 108 arrives with the 18:58 departure for Manchester Victoria (the 18:26 from Southport), as a 3-car Class 104 pulls away with the 18:56 departure for Southport (the 16:35 from Leeds). Three pairs of trains operated each day between Leeds and Southport, and were the only services on the line to offer first class accommodation at the time. S Gaskell.

After photographing from the bridge taking Appley Lane North over the railway, a short way further on I crossed the canal via Gillibrand Bridge and took the footpath which soon passed over the railway. A 4-car DMU led by a Class 108 was photographed here with a Southport to Manchester Victoria service. 22nd August 1984. S Gaskell.

Returning to Appley Bridge I found 47 229 in the waste siding coupled to its train of empty containers and ready to leave, however the 2-car Class 108 DMU from Southport would have to clear the section first. 22nd August 1984. S Gaskell.

With 45040 safely shut into the siding at Appley Bridge, a 2-car Class 110 DMU passes working the 15.20 Southport to York, a service taking 3 hours and 58 minutes. 30th August 1985. S Gaskell.
