These distinctive power-twin units were associated with the ex LYR routes in Lancashire for nearly thirty years. Blackburn Station was the last of the large L&Y stations to remain intact with its overall roof and iron & glass canopies, all since replaced by modern structures in the name of progress. For many years there was a Summer Saturday dated Castleford to Blackpool North working that went out-and-back in a day. Once the preserve of an Eastern Region Class 40, by June 23rd 1979 when this image was recorded at Blackburn of the return working from Blackpool, the service was provided by DMU sets, on this particular day formed of ten cars. The leading car was 'Calder Valley' Class 110 Driving Motor Composite E51833. Also in the formation were a Class 104 quad and a Met-Camm triple. The Class 110s were familiar visitors to Blackpool, in the 1970's there was a daily Bradford-Blackpool North service always formed of a single three-car set, and at the time was the only regular timetabled passenger train to run over the Copy Pit route. Martyn Hilbert.

With the vintage Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway platform clock showing 3.08 pm, A Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin set, with Driving Motor Brake Second M50765 at the rear, had just arrived at Blackburn with a service from Manchester Victoria via Bolton and Darwen on June 23rd 1979. The paraffin tail-lamp had not been removed from the rear of the set, ready for the return working back to Manchester. Such services normally terminated in the West facing bay at Blackburn, but on that particular day a four-car DMU set was stabled in the bay, necessitating the use of one of the through platforms for the turnaround. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

Blackburn is a station that has changed beyond all recognition at platform level since this image on 22/08/85 showing a trio of Calder Valley class 110 power twin DMU's are seen arriving with train 1E11 the 13.05 Preston to Leeds. The one time grand 1888 built L&YR (Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway) station with its twin span trainshed roof and large yellow brick buildings was all swept away in 2000 when a new more modern station replaced it. The original frontage at street level survived in part being grade II listed but everything seen here was removed. Adrian Nicholls.
