A small gaggle of passengers trudge their way to the exit at Markinch as Metro Cammell class 101 unit 225 rasps it's way to Edinburgh past the forlorn remnants of the semaphore signalling. January 1981. Bruce Galloway.

101 693 (53266 + 59302 + 51192) departs from Markinch with the 17:27 Edinburgh - Perth service on August 13, 1993. A week later the set would become a power twin and be transferred from Haymarket to Corkerhill, the centre car remaining and reformed into set 851. Hamish Stevenson.
In smart 'refurbished' livery a class 101 unit slows for the Markinch stop on 2L44 1425 Edinburgh to Dundee causing a temporary halt to the shunting activities of Barclay class 06 06008. Note the departmental ex-BR 5 plank runner wagon used for track circuit activation on the main line, an 'upgrade' from the previous ex-LNER 6 plank used for the same purpose. Behind the unit can be seen a GEC General signals lorry, whose crew are no doubt readying the anonymous brick relay box in preparation for the resignalling which took place a couple of months later. 3rd April 1980. Metro-Cammell 3 car set 222 arrives at Markinch on 29th November 1980 with 2L32, the 0925 Edinburgh to Dundee stopping service. Behind the unit can be seen A4 60009 'Union of South Africa' which would be trialled in the yard prior to working an excursion. Bruce Galloway.

The Branch Line Society "Fifeshire" railtour on 25 August 1984 used Derby low-density set 107444. Coach 52005 is nearest the camera, then 59804 and 52031, and they are seen sitting on the Auchmuty branch at Markinch. Jeremy Chapter.

On an overcast July 24th 1981, a three-car Metro-Cam Class 101 DMU formed of cars SC50160, SC59074 & SC50158 was stood at Markinch whilst forming a Edinburgh Waverley service. Markinch station was still furnished with British Railways 1950's Scottish Region light blue enamel signage including Totems on some of the lamp posts. Driving Motor Brake Second SC50160 eventually went on to carry Strathclyde orange livery, and a subsequent transfer to Chester and then Longsight in the early 1990's. The car found fame and fortune when it was repainted in retro BR green for its final years of operation, and has subsequently passed into preservation. Martyn Hilbert.

A few passengers make their way across the footbridge at Markinch as class 101 set 221 forming 2G75 15.22 Dundee to Edinburgh prepares to depart on 3rd April 1980. The leading vehicle is Sc50269 a former composite vehicle though by this time first class accommodation has been withdrawn on this service. Bruce Galloway.

Met-Camm set 229 waits by the signal box at Markinch to reverse across to the down line, the 2G12 09.10 Dundee to Edinburgh temporarily terminating due to resignalling work at Thornton. Note the taped over set number above the 229, and the defunct wiper on the left side. Crewe depot's 47228 charges through with the Sunday 1N20 08.40 Edinburgh to Inverness Inter-City service. 1st June 1980. Bruce Galloway.
